Steer, Stringer Lead Ducks Past LMU
03/02/19 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Spencer Steer hit two home runs and Cole Stringer threw 6.1 scoreless innings to lead Oregon to a 6-0 win over Loyola Marymount on Saturday at PK Park.
The Ducks claimed the series with the win after beating LMU 4-3 on Friday.
How it Happened: Steer gave Oregon the lead in the first inning with a solo home run and Stringer and three relievers made it hold up.
Steer drove the ball over the left-field wall on a 1-1 pitch, his first home run of the season. Oregon (6-2) added two more runs in the second on a Tanner Smith sacrifice fly and a Jonny DeLuca RBI ground out. Aaron Zavala and Cameron Campbell scored on those plays after leading off the inning with back-to-back singles.
DeLuca picked up his second RBI of the game with a sac fly in the top of the fourth to make it 4-0. Smith scored on the play after reaching base on a one-out walk.
Steer put the game away with a two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning. His blast scored Sam Novitske who walked to lead off the winning.
Stringer (1-0) was spectacular in his second start of the season. He allowed just two hits in his longest stint since going 7.0 innings in his first start of the 2017 season at Fresno State. Stringer only allowed one runner past first base while striking out three. The Ducks' lefty got 14 ground ball outs, with two of them coming on a double play to end the fourth inning when LMU (5-5) had runners at first and second with no outs.
Keaton Chase, Peyton Fuller and Christian Ciuffetelli all pitched in relief to wrap up the shut out.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On Stringer's performance…
"He's been good every time out. He was real sharp, coach Dietrich made a good decision to get some bullpen work. Cole's worked awfully hard since we've come back in January, I wouldn't call it sniffing the finish line but he's been a different guy. He's looked the part of a Friday guy and that was one of our best outings so far this season. Hopefully he can continue that as it obviously increases the depth of our pitching staff."
On the win…
Today was of the most complete games we've had. We still had five walks, so we're trying to sure those up. Other than that, three double plays, Novitske was all over the ballpark fielding, and Steer was all over the ballpark making good plays, and he obviously had a huge day. It was one of our most complete games so I'm happy with that and happy with this little homestand we've had."
Junior shortstop Spencer Steer
On hitting two home runs…
"Felt really good, it's funny because my teammates have been giving me a hard time because I was yet to have an extra base hit this year. So funny how that worked out, maybe those two home runs will shut them up"
Junior pitcher Cole Stringer
On inducing a lot of ground balls…
"Of course, I always like getting these guys more involved, because it sucks when you're playing in the cold and your kind of just standing around, makes it easier for me when I can get two or three pitch outs. I can go longer in games, and it's so much more fun when they're getting balls to them.
Box Score Notes: The shutout was Oregon's first in nearly a year with the last one coming in a 4-0 win over FAU on March 4, 2018 … Steer became the first Duck to hit two homers in a game since Jakob Goldfarb did it against Indiana State in Las Vegas (Feb. 18, 2018) … Shaun Chase was the last Duck to hit two homers in PK Park when he did it against Oregon State (May 20, 2014) … Steer finished with three RBI, his 23rd career multi-RBI game which ranks fifth all-time at Oregon … His two hits gave him 32 career multi-hit games, two shy of 10th all-time at Oregon … Novitske finished 2-for-3 with a run scored … It was his second career-multi hit game … … Novitske has reached base multiple times in seven of the eight games … DeLuca's multi-RBI game was the 10th of his career … … Novitske, Smith and Steer have reached base in all eight games … Stringer has allowed just five hits in 12 innings in two starts … He has turned in back-to-back quality starts for the first time in his career … Oregon scored five earned runs in six innings off LMU starter Josh Agnew after scoring just four in 12 innings in his two starts against the Ducks in 2018.
On Deck: Oregon will look for the sweep of LMU in game three on Sunday at 12 p.m. at PK Park. Junior Ryne Nelson (1-0, 6.10 ERA) will take the mound for Oregon.
