Gronlund Wins Duck Invitational
03/26/19 | Men's Golf
CRESWELL, Ore. – Senior Ryan Gronlund made a clutch birdie on his final hole of the tournament to win by one shot at the Duck Invitational Tuesday at Emerald Valley Golf Club. The win was Gronlund's first collegiate victory and made it three years in a row that an Oregon player has won the event.
Oregon finished in second place as a team after shooting 6 over in the final round, and going 7 over for the tournament. Sam Foust turned in a top-10 finish competing as an individual while Edwin Yi came in tied for 13th.
How it Happened: After putting his drive in the fairway on the 54th hole, Gronlund hit his second shot at the par-5 18th just short of the green. He hit a beautiful chip shot to just under three feet and poured in the birdie putt to get to 5 under for the tournament. Runner-up Cameron Kaneko of Hawaii had a 20-footer for birdie to tie Gronlund on his final hole, but left it just short.
Gronlund started his day two shots off the lead but made birdie at the par-5 third to help close that gap. After a bogey at four, he made three birdies in a six-hole stretch from eight through 13 to grab the outright lead. A bogey at 15 put him behind by a shot, however a bogey by Kaneko moved Gronlund into a tie atop the leaderboard heading to his final hole.
Foust turned in a 2-over 74 to record his second top-10 finish of the season. He had a bit of an up-and-down day, getting to even par through 10 holes, but dropping to 3 over after 17. Foust birdied his last hole – the par-4 16th – to end 2 over for the tournament.
Yi made a birdie on hole one to start his day, but struggled from holes five through nine, going 4 over in that stretch to make the turn at 3 over. After seven pars to start his back nine, he made bogey then birdie on holes 17 and 18 to shoot a 3-over 75.
Donald Kay had the Ducks' only other round of at least even par, shooting a 72 to finish tied for 24th, competing as an individual. Tom Gueant also came in tied for 24th while Yin Ho Yue finished tied for 29th at 6 over.
