Laurent Milestone Jump Starts Comeback win
03/07/19 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – On a night that senior Thomas Laurent became the program's all-time leader in wins, the No. 12 University of Oregon men's tennis team tallied a 4-2 win Thursday over Middle Tennessee. Laurent collected his 94th-career win in singles play to start the Ducks' four-point push to close out the match. Oregon has won nine in a row and improves to 12-1 overall.
"We came back with good intensity," head coach Nils Schyllander said. "We just didn't execute early. The energy and intensity was good, and we had to play without Ty in doubles, too, which shuffled the teams and probably had something to do with it. But in singles, I thought we fought back great."
Up Next: The Ducks open Pac-12 play Saturday by hosting Washington at the Student Tennis Center.
Thursday marked the fifth time UO has dropped the doubles point this season. With its rally against the Blue Raiders, UO is 4-1 in those matches.
The first-time duo of Laurent and Riki Oshima were the first Ducks off the court with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. However, Middle Tennessee (8-9) responded with wins on courts one and three to secure the opening point of the match.
The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 match advantage with a win on court six before Laurent put Oregon on the scoreboard with his milestone victory. Up a set but down a break late in the second, Laurent rattled off the final four games of the match for the 6-3, 7-5 triumph. With Thursday's victory, the Montpellier, France, native improved to 19-3 this season and is the winner of nine straight.
"The record is cool but more important is this whole weekend," Laurent said. "We have to get ready for the next match and then the next match … to keep it up until the end of the year. Once we're done with the season, then we can look back at the record."
