Ducks Defeat Washington in Pac-12 Opener, 5-1

Behind some solid singles performances, the Oregon men's tennis team pulled out a 5-1 victory over the Huskies on Saturday.
EUGENE, Ore. – The 12th-ranked Oregon men's tennis team edged out Washington in its Pac-12 opener, 5-1, on Saturday. Oregon has now won 10 in a row and improves to 13-1 on the season.
Up Next: The Ducks travel to Southern California where they will face University of California, Santa Barbara on Friday, March 15 (2 p.m. PT).
"The Pac-12 is one of the best conferences in America," said freshman Josh Charlton. "Even if on paper you look like you're a better team, it's always going to come down to the wire. Every match is so close, so you have take your opportunities when they come."
In doubles play, Washington (3-9) picked up wins on courts one and two to take a 1-0 match lead. Saturday marks the fifth time this season the Ducks have dropped the doubles point and rallied to win.
Thomas Laurent was the first to put the Ducks on the board with a 7-5, 6-2 win on court one. Laurent now has 95 career-wins, extending his UO record, and has won the last 10 matches.
Oregon took a 2-1 lead with a solid straight-set win from sophomore Charles Roberts on court six, his eighth dual win of the season.
After battling through the first set, Riki Oshima cruised in the second set of his match to claim a 7-6(1), 6-1 victory. The sophomore has now won 10 dual matches this season, including five in a row.
The deciding match was on court two, where Emmanuel Coste was in a third-set battle against Piers Foley. After dropping the first set, Coste dominated the rest of the way and won by default on a code violation, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2.
A couple courts over, Charlton finished seconds after Coste. The freshman fought his way to a second-set tie-break where he went on to a claim a well-deserved 7-6(5), 7-6(7) victory. This marks Charlton's 12th win in a row, improving 15-3 overall and 11-0 in dual play.
