Kafka, Somers Pitch Ducks to 3-1 Win
03/08/19 | Baseball
HONOLULU – Cullen Kafka cruised through seven innings and struck out five to pick up the win while Kolby Somers dominated over the final two innings, giving Oregon a 3-1 win over Hawaii Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.
How it Happened: Kafka (2-0) got 14 ground-ball outs over his career-long seven innings while scattering six hits and allowing one run. Somers replaced Kafka to start the eighth inning and retired all six batters he faced while striking out two to pick up his first career save.
The Ducks (8-4) got on the board in the first inning for the second straight day, pushing across two runs. Sam Novitske led off the game with a triple to right center and came in to score on a double steal with runners on the corners. Gabe Matthews followed with a run-scoring single up the middle to drive in Jonny DeLuca, making it 2-0.
Hawaii (8-6) got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the Oregon lead, making it 2-1. After Alex Baeza doubled with two outs on a ball over the head of Ducks' right fielder Aaron Zavala, Ethan Lopez drove him in with a single.
DeLuca added a key insurance run for the Ducks in the seventh inning, driving in Novitske, who reached with his third hit of the day with an RBI single through the right side, making it 3-1.
Quotable: Head coach George Horton
On the win…
"I'm proud of them for getting up off the deck (after last night's loss). Especially proud of the pitching staff. We made good defensive plays behind him and took care of all the little details that entail a good pitching and defensive game. I'm really proud of the guys, not only from a pitching standpoint, but also the whole team."
On Kolby Somers…
"He's had a slow start to the year, but we need him. He had a great outing at Portland and another great outing tonight, so it's good to have him back."
Box Score Notes: Kafka turned in his second quality start of the season and has pitched at least five innings in all four of his starts … Novitske recorded his first career three-hit game, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs, a triple and two stolen bases … He has reached base in all 12 games to start the season … Novitske has gotten on multiple times in 10 of the 12 games and reached three times in five games … Oregon worked four walks against Hawaii starter Dylan Thomas, who came in with just three walks in 13 innings pitched this season.
On Deck: The Ducks will play game three of four against Hawaii Saturday at 8:30 p.m. PT. Ryne Nelson (1-0, 6.06) will be on the mound for Oregon while Hawaii counters with lefty Jeremy Wu-Yelland (1-0, 3.86).
