Freshmen Highlight Solid Opening Round

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Freshmen Craig Ronne and Yin Ho Yue each shot a 3-under 67 to sit in a tie for sixth as Oregon is tied for second at 2 under after round one of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club Monday.
The Ducks went low on the back nine to move up the leaderboard, with the five counting scorers combining to shoot 7 under on the homeward half.
How it Happened: Ronne bogeyed the par-3 third after two pars to start his day to drop to 1 over. He bounced back though with birdies at two of his next three to get into red figures. He went made a bogey at seven and a birdie at nine to make the turn at 1 under. Ronne dropped a shot to open his back nine but birdied three of his last eight holes to shoot a 2-under 33 coming in.
Yue got off to a rocky start, going 3 over in his first four holes, but went bogey-free the rest of the round. He made back-to-back birdies at holes five and six and made the turn 1 over before making four birdies on the back nine to shoot 3 under on the homeward half.
Edwin shot grinded out an even-par 70 to sit in at tie for 14th. He was 2 over through eight holes, but closed the opening nine with an eagle at the par-5 ninth to get back to level par. Yi shot even par on the back nine, making two birdies and two bogeys, including a near hole-out at the par-4 17th where he made birdie.
Kevin Geniza turned in a 1-over 71 and is tied for 21st while freshman Tom Gueant shot a 3-over 73 to round out the counting scores for the Ducks.
Host San Jose State holds the round one lead at 4 under while USC's Justin Suh, San Jose State's Sean Yu and Stanford's Isaiah Salinda share the individual lead at 6 under.
