EUGENE, Ore. – In his first-ever collegiate decathlon, freshman Max Vollmer sits in fifth place in group four at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif. He was one of three Ducks in action Wednesday along with Keira McCarrell and Dalen Hargett. At the end of day one, all three are inside the top seven of their respective groups behind a combined 10 personal bests.
Multi-event action at the Bryan Clay will conclude Thursday with events started at 10:30 a.m. (PT). The Ducks' throws crew will also be competing tomorrow at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif.
Vollmer's day was highlighted by lifetime bests in the 100 meters (10.87), shot put (15.00m/49-2.5) and high jump (1.87m/6-1.5) on his way to 4,040 points through five events. He will go into Thursday in fifth overall and third among collegians in the field. Day two of the decathlon includes the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters.
McCarrell was 4-for-4 in PRs with outdoor bests in each event Wednesday. She finished the day with 3,269 points, good for seventh in group four of the heptathlon. McCarrell got things started with a 14.48 in the 100-meter hurdles and carried the momentum throughout the day with personal bests in the shot put, high jump and 200 meters.
Day two of the heptathlon features the long jump, javelin and 800 meters. McCarrell was an NCAA West qualifier in the javelin last season. She will be looking to replace her personal-best score of 5,161 points that she set at last year's Bryan Clay meet.
With the help of three personal bests, Hargett posted a day-one total of 3,448 points and sits in sixth place in group one. The Newport, Ore., native established new PRs in the 100 meters, long jump and shot put. The Bryan Clay decathlon marks Hargett's first at Oregon having transferred from Montana State with a lifetime best of 6,537 points.
