EUGENE, Ore. – After a strong opener littered with personal best, the Ducks' multi-events group carried the momentum into Thursday's action at the Bryan Clay Invitational and came away with three personal bests including two Oregon top-10 performances. Max Vollmer and Keira McCarrell added their names to the program's record book while Dalen Hargett surpassed his previous career best.
Vollmer, in his first-collegiate decathlon, posted a score of 7,840 points to become the No. 7 performer in Oregon history. Over the course of the two-day, 10-event competition, he tallied six personal bests with three coming Thursday in the 110-meter hurdles, discus and pole vault. Vollmer finished fourth in the meet's top decathlon group and third among collegians in the field.
A year removed from establishing her previous best at the 2018 Bryan Clay meet, McCarrell pushed her new lifetime best to 5,336 points. Over the course of the two-day competition, she had five event PRs including a new best of 2:25.74 at 800 meters to cap the heptathlon. With her performance, McCarrell moved past Abby Andrus (5,325 pts/2014) into ninth on the program's career top-10 list. She finished fifth overall in group four.
Based on marks entering the weekend and other scores in the field, Vollmer is currently ranked No. 5 in the NCAA in the decathlon while McCarrell's score ranks among the top 30 nationally.
Hargett was competing in his first decathlon as a Duck, having transferred from Montana State. Along with the new career-best score, he added two event personal bests Friday with his efforts in the 110-meter hurdles and pole vault. The Newport, Ore., native finished the Bryan Clay Invitational with 6,583 points.
Oregon was also in action at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, the first of two meets this week for the throws crew. The Ducks were led by a pair of top-five finishes by Kiana Phelps in the shot put and discus, and a fifth-place showing by Max Lydum in the hammer throw. The group will stay in Long Beach for the Beach Invitational which begins Friday.
Friday also brings the start of the Mt. SAC Relays (sprints/jumps) and Cardinal Classic (distance).
