Seven Wins, School Record at Thane Baker Invitational
01/16/26 | Track and Field
Kobe Lawrence added nearly two feet to his indoor school record in the shot put.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Oregon track and field picked up tallied seven wins and four top-10 program marks including a school record Friday at the Thane Baker Invitational, hosted by Kansas State. On the way to victory in the shot put, sophomore Kobe Lawrence extended his own school record.
The Ducks' winners circle also featured Katie Clute in the invitational 3,000 meters, Kai Graves-Blanks and Aaliyah McCormick in a sweep of the 60-meter hurdles, Samantha McDonnell in the invitational mile and Amirah Shaheed as a double winner in the 60 and 200 meters.
Lawrence won the shot put with a best of 19.81m/65-0, adding nearly two feet to the previous record. All of his final four throws surpassed the old UO mark of 19.21m/63-0.25 set at last season's Razorback Invitational. Based on marks coming into the weekend, Lawrence moves to No. 3 in the NCAA this year.
Redshirt freshman Ben Smith made his official Oregon debut Friday in the shot put, and on his last toss, got out to 18.68m/61-3.5 to become the No. 2 performer in UO history.
McCormick collected the Ducks' first win of the day, taking the top spot in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.19, a new meet and Cliff Rovelto Indoor Track facility record. She'd set the previous track record during the prelims with her time of 8.20 as the day's top qualifier. Teammate Annaleise Taylor (8.63) made it a 1-2 UO finish with her runner-up effort.
Graves-Blanks completed the Oregon hurdles sweep with his time of 7.75, good for a new lifetime best, meet record and the No. 6 spot on the program's all-time list. The junior transfer came into the season with a best of 7.78, a time he ran twice a season ago for Iowa.
The Ducks gained another top-10 outing in the event with Peyton Bair's lifetime-best 7.83 in the prelims. Bair, the reigning NCAA heptathlon champion, becomes the ninth-fastest performer in UO history in the 60-meter hurdles. He is in his first season at Oregon after beginning his career at Mississippi State.
The sprint success continued with sophomore Amirah Shaheed leading a sweep of the top-four spots in the women's 60 meters. She went into the final as the second-overall qualifier and produced a time of 7.45 for the win. She was followed by teammates Brazil Neal, Lily Jones and Niya Clayton, respectively.
Shaheed picked up her second win of the day in the 200, stopping the clock in 24.11 with Clayton and Neal finishing in third and sixth, respectively.
Oregon posted a fourth 1-2 finish with McDonnell (4:48.92) and Allura Markow (4:51.00) in respective winner and runner-up spots in the women's mile. The two were together at the bell lap but McDonnell put a couple seconds between her and her teammate over the final 200 meters for the win.
Clute led from the gun on her way to winning the invitational section of the 3,000 meters. She crossed the finish line in 9:27.29, more than 11 seconds clear of the field. The UO sophomore pulled away over the final eight laps; at 1400 meters, she and runner-up Lucy Ndungu of Wichita State were separated by just half a second.
In the first timed final of the afternoon, Bahiya El Arfaoui was first among collegians and second overall at 1,000 meters. The UO newcomer crossed in 2:39.63 to become the No. 3 performer in NCAA history, and just the sixth collegiate woman to dip below 2:40 in the event. El Arfaoui moved from fourth place to second on the final lap.
Notable: Aiden Carter established lifetime bests of 7.96 and 7.32m/24-0.25 in the 60-meter hurdles and long jump, respectively … first heptathlon for UO combined-events group is scheduled for the Razorback Invitational … additional runner-up finishes by Grant Valley (6.82) in the 60 meters and Benjamin Balazs (8:01.73) in the invitational section of the 3,000 meters … grad transfer Micaela De Mello (8.13) won the 60-meter hurdles at the Spokane Sports Showcase; has outdoor eligibility remaining.
