Ducks Fall to Arizona State on the Road

TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 42 University of Oregon men's tennis team began its weekend with a 4-0 road loss at No. 32 Arizona State. With the setback, the Ducks drop to 13-4 overall with a 1-2 record in Pac-12 play.
Up Next: The Ducks close out their road trip Sunday afternoon at No. 29 Arizona. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT) at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center on the UA campus. The Wildcats are 15-4 this year and 1-3 in Pac-12 play after a Friday win over Washington.
With wins at lineup spots one and three, Arizona State (10-10, 2-2 Pac-12) took the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead in the match. The Ducks have lost the doubles point in their last six matches.
The home team carried its momentum into singles play where it won five of the six first sets, save for Ty Gentry taking the opening frame 6-3 at the No. 2 spot in Oregon's lineup. The Sun Devils went on to take a 3-0 lead with victories on courts five and six.
At the top spot, sophomore Emmanuel Coste was down a set and a break but got back on serve, saving two match points for No. 71 Nathan Ponwith. Coste fought off another match point at deuce in his next service game but held to pull even at 5-all. However, Ponwith rattled off the final two games to secure the team win for Arizona State.
Gentry and Dominik Kellovsky split sets on court two and were headed for a third when the Sun Devils clinched the match. On courts three and four, respectively, Riki Oshima and Joshua Charlton were each down a set but Charlton was a point away from forcing a third frame.
