Ducks Run-Rule Pitt to Open Weekend in Missouri
04/06/19 | Softball
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Oregon softball team used a six-run fourth inning and a strong outing from sophomore Jordan Dail to run-rule Pittsburgh, 9-1, in five innings on Saturday and get a busy nonconference weekend off to a strong start at Mizzou Softball Stadium.
The Ducks (13-18) will be back in action at 2 p.m. PT against Missouri in their second game of the day (SEC Network).
How it Happened: Pittsburgh (5-30) brought a one-out walk around to score in the second on a two-out double to take a 1-0 lead, but that would be the last baserunner to reach against Dail. The left-hander retired the next 10 batters in a row, six by way of strikeout, to go five solid innings and set the stage for the offense.
Shaye Bowden got the bats going in the second with a leadoff double before moving to third on an Allee Bunker single, and the Ducks' catcher came in to score on a double-play ball to tie the game, 1-1. A single by Hannah Galey and a walk by Annalisa Williamson kept things going with two outs, and Haley Cruse gave the Ducks a 2-1 lead with an RBI single. Cruse then stole second and an error brought Williamson in from third to make it 3-1, Oregon.
With Dail dealing in the circle, Oregon's veterans fueled a huge six-run, two-out rally in the fourth to put the Ducks into run-rule territory. Galey notched her second two-out hit with a double to right field, and Cruse brought her in with her second RBI single of the day. Senior Cherish Burks followed with a booming three-run home run to left to break things open, and classmate April Utecht made it an eight-run Oregon lead with a two-run bomb to dead center field.
At the Plate: Cruse went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a stolen base, Burks drove in three with her second homer of the year and Utecht finished 2-for-3 with her sixth home run and two RBIs in a big day for Oregon's upperclassmen. Galey was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Bowden and Bunker each had a hit and Williamson worked a pair of walks.
In the Circle: Dail was untouchable after the RBI double in the second, the only hit against her all game long. The Forest, Va., native finished with nine total strikeouts to just two walks to improve to 11-8 on the season.
Notable: Utecht is now tied with Rachel Cid for the team home run lead (6) and tied with Cid and Bowden for the most multi-RBI games (6) … Cruse improved her hitting streak to five straight games and raised her team-best stolen base total to 10 … Oregon is now 2-0 all-time against Pitt.
Up Next: The Ducks will face Missouri at 2 p.m. PT on SEC Network. Oregon will wrap its weekend in Columbia on Sunday with another doubleheader against the Panthers and the Tigers.
