EUGENE, Ore. – Between the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., and the John Knight Twilight hosted by Western Oregon, the University of Oregon track and field teams combined for four wins including an NCAA top-15 performance by Cravon Gillespie at 200 meters.
Reed Brown capped the night at the Sun Angel meet with a victory in his first-ever collegiate 5,000 meters. In Monmouth, Ore., the Ducks got wins from Caramia Mestler (1,500 meters) in her outdoor debut and Austin Tharp in the hammer throw.
Day two of the Sun Angel Classic is set to feature six of the Ducks' top-15 national performers in Gillespie (100m), Susan Ejore (800m), Oraine Palmer (100m), Kiana Phelps (discus) and 4x100-meter relay teams. Competition is slated for a 9 a.m. (PT) start in Tempe.

Already the NCAA leader at 100 meters, Gillespie stopped the clock at 20.74 to win the premiere section of the 200 meters at the Sun Angel Classic. Based on times entering the weekend, that stands as the No. 12 showing in the country. Gillespie led a quartet of Ducks in the top nine of the event along with Oraine Palmer (21.19) in fourth and Orwin Emilien and Rieker Daniel in eighth and ninth, respectively.
In the women's 200, defending Pac-12 champion Makenzie Dunmore posted a time of 23.35 to finish in second overall and first among collegiate runners. She was followed closely by teammates Iman Brown (23.48) in third and Briyahna DesRosiers (23.67) in fifth. The Women of Oregon placed six—Jasmin Reed (23.79), Venessa D'Arpino (23.87) and Hannah Waller (24.14)—inside the top 10 of the event.
Mestler and Tharp led the Ducks' efforts at the Knight Twilight, which featured six top-three efforts. Tharp got out to a mark of 57.18m/187-7 in the fifth round of the hammer to add four feet to his PR in the event. In Oregon's final event at the meet, Mestler crossed in 4:47.61 to out-lean the competition by just .02 seconds.
The Ducks also collected runner-up Twilight finishes from Rachel Vinjamuri at 200 and 400 meters, and JoJo Ananouko in the javelin. Sophomore Sydnee Walker rounded out the results with a bronze finish in the hammer throw.
In the Oregon's first result in Tempe, junior Maddie Rabing finished fifth overall—and third among college athletes—in the hammer with a season-best 60.98m/200-0, just eight inches off her personal best. The measurement represents the second of 200 feet or farther in her career.
The Men of Oregon were solid in the hammer throw, led by redshirt junior Max Lydum who was third in the premiere section of the event. He had a toss of 62.44m/204-10 in the fourth round to get within two feet of his career best. In the open section of the hammer, sophomore Jared Briere added six feet to his PR with a best of 56.69m/186-0 at the Sun Angel meet.
With eyes on heptathlons later this season, Tori Sloan and Keira McCarrell were third and fifth in the long jump with each posting a personal best. Sloan moved from ninth into the top three on her final attempt which marked in at 5.47m/17-11.5 while McCarrell had a best of 5.42m/17-9.5 in the second round of the competition.
Brown, in his first race since the NCAA Indoor Championships, posted a time of 14:22.98 to pace a 1-3-8 finish for the Ducks along with Austin Tamagno and Jack Yearian, respectively. Challenged at the top of the home stretch by Austin Hindman of USA Triathlon Project, Reed pulled away for the victory.
