EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon's first three hitters combined for seven hits, four RBI and three runs scored but it wasn't enough as the Ducks dropped an 8-5 decision to No. 12 Oregon State on Saturday at PK Park in front of 4,130 fans.
How it Happened: Junior third baseman Spencer Steer went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead Oregon, while freshman right fielder Tanner Smith was 3-for-5 with a home run and a RBI with two runs scored. Freshman leadoff hitter Sam Novitske went 2-for-5 with a walk and a run scored.
Oregon State (33-14-1, 19-4 Pac-12) jumped to an early lead scoring three runs in the first, a run in the second and a run in the third off Ducks' starter Cullen Kafka (5-5).
The Ducks responded with single runs in the first and third innings to stay close. Smith hit his fourth home run of the season in the first inning before Oregon got a Steer RBI single in the third.
Oregon State scored two runs in the fifth and a run in the sixth, but the Ducks (24-24, 8-15 Pac-12) matched the Beavers in both innings.
Steer drove in two runs in the fifth with an RBI double plating Smith and freshman shortstop Kyle Froemke who led off the inning with a single. He moved to second on Smith's third hit of the game.
Froemke drove in Oregon's sixth-inning run on a ground out that scored sophomore Evan Williams, who led off the inning with a double.
The Ducks bullpen put together one of its best efforts of the season. Junior Cole Stringer, sophomore Peyton Fuller and junior Nico Tellache combined to allow just one earned run in 6.2 innings. Tellache pitched three scoreless innings retiring all nine hitters he faced.
