Vollmer Wins Pac-12 Decathlon Title
05/05/19 | Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Max Vollmer made his Pac-12 Championships debut a memorable one with a first-place performance in the decathlon. In the conference team race, the Men of Oregon collected 14 points between Vollmer's win and the fifth-place finish by Dalen Hargett.
The 2019 Pac-12 Championships continues May 11-12 at Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz. On the women's side, the Ducks picked up a point from an eighth-place showing by Keira McCarrell in the heptathlon.
Vollmer is the 10th Duck in program history to win the conference decathlon title, and first since Mitch Modin won in 2017. Beginning with the three-peat (2008-10) by Ashton Eaton, the Oregon men have won eight of the past 12 titles in the event.
Over the two days of competition, Vollmer won six of the 10 events and never finished lower than third. His total of 7,964 points is also a personal best and the highest winning score since the 2013 conference meet. Vollmer now ranks No. 3 on the NCAA this season in the decathlon and has moved up to sixth in the UO all-time top 10.
Hargett began day two in seventh place overall but used a personal best in the discus to move into the top five. He finished at least third in the first four events Sunday and posted season bests in the javelin and 1,500 meters. Hargett registered a personal-best 6,827 points with the help of two personal bests and three season bests.
The Newport, Ore., native entered the weekend with a high score of 6,583 points from this year's Bryan Clay Invitational in April.
Sitting in 10th place after the long jump, McCarrell took the top spot in the javelin to move back into scoring position heading into the final event of the day. She held on to the eighth-place spot after the 800 meters to score her first-career point at the Pac-12 meet. McCarrell finished the two-day, seven-event competition with 5,118 points.
