Freshman Paces Ducks on Day One of Husky Invite

BREMERTON, Wash. – Freshman Nate Stember got his collegiate career off to an incredible start, shooting rounds of 69 and 71 to finish day one of the Husky Invitational tied for ninth Monday at Gold Mountain Golf Club. Oregon is in fifth place as a team at 4 under after shooting 2 under in both rounds.
How it Happened – Round One: Stember got off to a great start with a birdie at the par-4 opening hole. He made a bogey at three to drop back to even but birdied both par 5s at holes six and nine to make the turn at 2 under. Bogeys at holes 12 and 13 moved him back to even, but the Portland, Ore. native finished with three birdies over his final five holes to shoot 3 under.
Craig Ronne and Tom Gueant both shot an even-par 72 and were tied for 26th. Ronne poured in four birdies in his opening round but dropped shots with a pair of bogeys and a double bogey. Gueant got off to a slow start with a 3-over 39 on the opening nine, but shot 3 under coming home highlighted by an eagle at the par-5 14th.
Round Two: Stember came out a bit slow in round two, bogeying two of his first four holes before making birdie at the par-5 sixth to get back to 1 over. He followed with five birdies and a bogey in his first seven holes after the turn to move to 6 under, but bogeyed his final two holes to shoot a 1-under 71.
Ronne turned in a steady round of 1-under 71 to move into a tie for 17th. After going bogey, birdie to start, the sophomore made bogey at seven to shoot 1 over on the front nine before making two birdies and seven pars on the back side get back into red numbers.
Yin Ho Yue birdied the par-4 third hole to get back to even for the tournament, but followed with three bogeys before making the turn. He shot 2 under on the back nine to shoot an even-par 72.
Gueant and Kevin Geniza also turned in rounds of even-par 72 in round two. Gueant bounced back from a 3 over opening nine with a bogey-free 3-under 33 coming home to put him in a tie for 19th. Geniza carded three birdies and three bogeys to right the ship after shooting 5 over in round one.
Host Washington leads the way after 36 holes at 22 under while Long Beach State's Owen Avrit holds the individual lead at 7 under.

Notable: Stember's 3-under 69 in the first round was the lowest by an Oregon freshman in their first collegiate round since Donald Kay shot a 69 in 2017 … He also became the first Oregon freshman to open his career with back-to-back under par rounds since Thomas Lim in 2013.
