Oregon Drops Game at Washington State
01/16/20 | Men's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 8 Oregon couldn't overcome Washington State's hot shooting night from three-point range and fell to the Cougars 72-61 Thursday night at Beasley Coliseum.
WSU, which came into the game making less than 30 percent on three-pointers for the season, hit 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) against the Ducks.
Payton Pritchard had 22 points for Oregon while Chris Duarte added 15.
How it Happened: Early in the second half, Washington State (11-7, 2-3) went on an 11-0 run to take a 47-39 lead with 15:38 left in the game.
Oregon (14-4, 3-2) went on a 9-0 run, capped by a steal and dunk by Duarte, to tie the game at 50-50 with 10:15 remaining.
But WSU closed out the game on a 22-11 run.
In the first half, after the Cougars took a 31-24 lead on Aljaz Kunc's three-pointer with 5:40 left in the first half, Duarte sparked a 10-0 Oregon rally with a three-pointer and a couple of fast-break buckets to give the Ducks a 34-31 edge with 3:57 remaining.
Pritchard's three-pointer made it 37-34 Ducks at halftime.
Pritchard and Duarte both had 10 points in the first half.
Who Stood Out: Led by Duarte's four steals, Oregon scored 16 points off 11 WSU turnovers in the first half. Duarte finished the game with a career high five steals.
Notable: Pritchard jumped from 10th to seventh on the UO career scoring list Thursday night. With 22 points against the Cougars, Pritchard passed a trio of Oregon legends – Stan Love (1968-71), Fred Jones (1998-02) and Malik Hairston (2004-08) who all scored 1,644 points during their careers at Oregon. Pritchard finished the night with 1,552 career points.
Quotable:
Head coach Dana Altman
"The execution, that's on me, but the effort, really disappointing. I know our fans have to be disappointed. We have to regroup and be ready for a quick turnaround on Saturday."
Up Next: Oregon visits Washington Saturday at 12:45 p.m. (CBS).
