Ducks lose heartbreaker

TEMPE, Ariz. – Anthony Hall was thrown out at home trying to score the tying run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 6-5 San Diego win at Tempe Diablo Stadium in the Angels College Classic on Saturday.
How it Happened: With the Ducks down a run with runners on first and second and two outs, Sam Olsson lined a ball to right-center field that San Diego right fielder Michael Dixon caught. Hall tagged up from second and advanced to third before the throw from Dixon squirted away from the relay man and ended up near the pitcher's mound.
Â
Oregon head coach Mark Wasikowski waved Hall around third, while Toreros third baseman Adam Lopez scrambled for the ball before fielding it and throwing home to retire Hall and give San Diego (2-0) the win.
Â
San Diego scored two runs in the top of the first to take the early lead, but the Ducks quickly answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Â
Three singles by Sam Novitske, Kenyon Yovan and an RBI single by Gabe Matthews got the Ducks on the board. Hall drove in Yovan with a ground out to the shortstop to tie the game. Aaron Zavala, who made his first career start at third base, followed with an RBI single scoring Matthews to give Oregon (0-2) the lead. Â
Â
San Diego retook the lead in the top of the second, scoring two runs on three hits.
Â
The Ducks bounced back in the bottom of the third. Yovan singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a Matthews ground rule double down in the right-field corner. Hall scored Yovan with a sacrifice fly to center tying the game 4-4. Zavala gave the Ducks the lead again, 5-4, with a RBI single scoring Matthews. Â Â Â
Â
San Diego tied the game at five in the top of the fifth on a Cody Jefferis single scoring Paul Kunst.
Â
Oregon's bullpen was once again solid. Brett Walker and Kolby Somers each threw two scoreless innings to keep the game tied, while allowing just two combined hits.
Â
The Ducks loaded the bases in the eighth but could not score, before the Toreros took the lead in the top of the ninth.
Box Score Notes: Zavala went 3-for-4 with two RBI … With his 34th career double in the third inning, Matthews moved into a tie for fifth all-time in doubles with Brett Thomas (2011-13) ...Tanner Smith had his second outfield assist in as many days running his career total to seven, which is tied for fourth all-time with Steven Packard (2010, 2013-16) … He also extended his consecutive starts streak to 37 games … Sam Novitske extended his consecutive starts streak to 58 games … Peyton Fuller made his first career start, striking out four and giving up two earned runs in four innings … Jack Scanlon made his first career start as a Duck.
On Deck: Oregon faces Pepperdine in the Angels College Classic on Sunday at 10 a.m. Junior Robert Ahlstrom will start for the Ducks.
