West Makes History in Boston
02/27/20 | Track and Field
BOSTON, Mass. – Redshirt senior James West ran the fastest indoor 1,500 meters in collegiate history Thursday evening at the BU Last Chance meet. In a pro-heavy field, the UO distance standout crossed the finish line in 3:36.93 to set the new all-time NCAA best.
With his effort on the BU track, West surpassed former UO great Edward Cheserek on the collegiate all-time list. Cheserek owned the previous best of 3:37.01 from 2017, a mark he set on the same BU track on his way to the collegiate record in the mile (3:52.01).
Thursday's performance marks the second collegiate record for West within the past month. He was also part of the Ducks' distance-medley relay that broke the NCAA record in a time of 9:24.52 at the Razorback Invitational (Jan. 31). West teamed with Jacob Miller, Charlie Hunter and Cooper Teare for the record-breaking performance.
Taking a shot at the Olympic standard of 3:35.00, West finished fourth overall in the invitational field. Josh Thompson, representing Nike and the Bowerman Track Club, won the race in a time of 3:34.77.
West owns a pair of top-10 NCAA season marks, ranking sixth nationally at 3,000 meters (7:47.10) and seventh in the mile (3:57.43). Both personal-best time also rank among the top 10 in UO history.
Earlier in the day, senior Jackson Mestler finished eighth in the invitational 3,000 meters (7:59.46) as the only collegian in the field. The Eugene, Ore., native owns the No. 7 time in the country at 5,000 meters with his time of 13:36.62 from the Husky Classic.
