Rosselli Wins World U20 Discus Gold

The incoming UO freshman set an American U20 record during Sunday’s competition.
EUGENE, Ore. – Incoming Oregon freshman Simon Rosselli won a gold medal in the discus Sunday at the World Athletics U20 Championships at Hayward Field. On his winning sixth-round toss, Rosselli reset the American U20 record with a final measure of 66.39m/217-9 to move from fifth to the first-place spot.

The Spokane, Wash., becomes the fourth American to win the discus U20 title and eclipses the previous national U20 record of 65.34 meters set by Mason Finley in 2009. Rosselli entered the day with a best of 62.67 meters from the USATF U20 Championships in June; he had four measures beyond that Sunday.

Rosselli sat in third place (64.16m) after the first three rounds but had slipped to fifth when he stepped into the ring for his final throw. He finished atop the discus (1.75 kg) podium with Sten-Erik Iir of Estonia and Joseph Richard Salmon of Jamaica, respectively.

Including Rosselli's performance Sunday, future Ducks won three World U20 medals this week. Jaslene Massey and Mia Uusorg each took silver in the discus and heptathlon, respectively, on day two.
