Ducks Drop Top-15 Battle in Extras
02/29/20 | Softball
STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 10 Oregon took the lead twice in extra innings, but dropped a back-and-forth top-15 battle on the road at No. 15 Oklahoma State, 5-4, in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday at Cowgirl Stadium.
How it Happened: The two teams went back-and-forth in the two extra frames, taking advantage of the international tiebreaker rule. The Ducks jumped in front in the eighth, when Rachel Cid started the inning on second and came in to score when Vallery Wong drew a two-out bases-loaded walk. Oklahoma State answered in the bottom half with a Chyenne Factor RBI single to tie things at two.
Terra McGowan reclaimed the lead for the Ducks in the ninth, delivering a sacrifice fly to score Haley Cruse who was placed on second to start the inning. Oregon threatened to add more, loading the bases with two outs, but couldn't capitalize. Oklahoma State scored two in the home half of the ninth, tying it with Sydney Pennington's RBI single and winning it via a Chelsea Alexander walk-off single.
Oregon got back into to its habit of striking early, getting on the board with a run in the top of the second. Allee Bunker led off the inning with a single, then stole second before Ariel Carlson drew a walk. Bunker then came around to score when Deijah Pangilinan reached on a bunt single and throwing error to make it 1-0.
Oklahoma State took the lead on a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, but the Ducks answered and tied it back up in the sixth. After a strikeout to start the frame, Oregon strung together three straight singles, the last coming courtesy of Pangilinan to score Bunker and tie it up at two apiece, where it would stay until extras.
Oregon got solid efforts in the circle from Jordan Dail and Brooke Yanez despite the losing effort. Dail shutout the Cowgirls over the first four innings and gave up just a two-run homer with six strikeouts over five innings before giving way to Yanez in the sixth. From there, the transfer lefty battled through tough situations in the next three innings before giving up the walk-off in the ninth.
