Ducks Rally For 4-3 Win at Louisville
02/07/20 | Men's Tennis
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Oregon men's tennis team extended their winning streak to four in a row Friday afternoon with a 4-3 win at Louisville. The Ducks lost the doubles point and dropped the first set in four of six singles matches before rallying for the road victory. With the result, Oregon improves to 7-2 this dual season.
How It Happened: The Ducks fell behind early with Louisville (5-3) picking up doubles wins on courts two and three. Senior Ty Gentry and sophomore Joshua Charlton, the No. 9 duo in the country, were ahead 5-3 at the No. 1 spot when the opening point was decided.
Friday's match is the Ducks' first win of the season after losing the doubles point.
Oregon pulled even and then went ahead with a pair of straight-set wins by Charlton and freshman Luke Vandecasteele on courts one and five, respectively. Charlton was the first Duck off the court with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 66 Tin Chen, good for his fifth victory over a ranked opponent this season. Charlton is the No. 29-ranked player in the most recent ITA release.
Vandecasteele posted the Ducks' second win, a 7-6, 6-1 triumph over Daniel Fainblum. The victory is his 10th of the season. Vandecasteele is the fourth Oregon player this season to reach double figures in the win column along with Charlton, fellow freshman Jesper Klöv-Nilsson and junior Brandon Lam.
Louisville (5-3) responded with wins at No. 3 and 6 singles to regain the lead on their home courts. The Ducks trailed 3-2 but had third-set advantages on courts two and four with junior Emmanuel Coste and Riki Oshima, respectively.
At No. 2 singles, Coste shook off a slow start to beat Sergio Hernandez in three sets to even the match score at 3-all. The match on court four between Oshima and David Mizrahi would decide the outcome.
Oshima dropped the opening frame but pulled through in a second-set tiebreaker to force a third. The UO junior got off to a quick start and came away with the 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 clinching victory. Oshima has won four straight and improves to 7-1 during the dual season.
