Ducks Break Out The Bats In 13-2 Win
03/08/20 | Baseball
Honolulu, Hawaii – Oregon homered three times and Brett Walker threw eight shutout innings Sunday afternoon in a 13-2 win over Hawaii in the series finale.
How it Happened: Kenyon Yovan got Oregon (8-7) on the board early. His opposite field two-run home run gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Ducks added three more in the top of the third. Freshman Josh Kasevich roped a two-RBI double down the left-field line, scoring Yovan who had singled to lead off the inning and Anthony Hall who had walked in his at-bat. Freshman Jack Scanlon followed with a double of his own, this one off the top of the wall in center field to plate Kasevich and increase the Ducks' lead to 5-0.
Aaron Zavala continued his hot start to the season with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, extending the Ducks' lead to 6-0.
The Ducks put five more on the board in the sixth. Sam Novitske doubled to leadoff the inning and Gabe Matthews walked. Zavala then smacked a single through the right side, bringing home Novitske. Pinch-hitter Sebastian Orduno reached on a fielder's choice, and Matthews scored from second off an errant throw by the Hawaii first baseman, increasing the lead to 8-0. Scanlon then hit a three-run home run just inside the right field foul pole, increasing the Ducks' advantage to 11-0 through six innings.
In the seventh, Novitske and Yovan singled to start the inning. Matthews then hit a single through the right side, scoring Novitske and advancing Yovan to third. Zavala followed with a sacrifice fly to score Yovan, the Ducks' 13th run of the game.
On the mound, Walker produced his best start in a Duck uniform. The junior right-hander retired the first 16 batters he faced before giving up a hit with one out in the bottom of the sixth. He pitched a career-high eight innings, gave up just two hits, struck out three Hawaii hitters and did not allow a run.
Hawaii scored two runs in the ninth to cut the lead to 13-2 before Yovan retired three batters in a row to end the game.
