04/13/20 | Cross Country, Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – Over the next two weeks beginning Monday, NBC Sports (NBCSN) will air nearly 100 hours of classic Olympic programming. Former Oregon track and field standouts—and reigning Olympic champions—Matthew Centrowitz and Ashton Eaton will be featured Tuesday night during one of the network's "Return to Rio" segments.
Tuesday, April 14
9 p.m. (PT) – Return to Rio: Track and Field Men's Distance (Centrowitz, 1500m)
11 p.m. (PT) – Return to Rio: Track and Field Multi/Field Events (Eaton, decathlon)
In winning gold at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Centrowitz became the first American man to win the 1,500 meters since 1908. Centrowitz is the fifth alum of the Men of Oregon to win Olympic gold, joining the short list also featuring Eaton, Otis Davis, Mac Wilkins and Joaquim Cruz.
Eaton successfully defended his Olympic gold medal in the decathlon, becoming just the third double winner in the history of the event. In the process, Eaton tied the Olympic record of 8,893 points first set by Roman Sebrle (Czech Republic) during the 2004 Games in Athens.
The 2016 Olympic Games saw six medals won by UO alumni. In addition to Centrowitz and Eaton, the Ducks' medalists in Rio included Phyllis Francis (gold/4x400m), English Gardner (gold/4x100m), Galen Rupp (bronze/10,000m) and Brianne Theisen-Eaton (bronze/heptathlon).
