02/17/21 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon men's tennis team continued its strong start to the season with a 6-1 win Wednesday night over Portland. With the mid-week victory, the Ducks improve to 5-0.
Â
How it Happened: For the fourth-consecutive outing, the Ducks swept all three doubles matches with Luke Vandecasteele and Quinn Vandecasteele securing the point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. At No. 3 doubles, Emmanuel Coste and Jesper Klov-Nilsson posted a 6-2 triumph and were first off the court.
Â
With the doubles point in hand, the match on court one went into an early tiebreaker at 5-all. The UO pair of Joshua Charlton and Brandon Lam rattled off four of the last five points in a 6-5(3) victory and improved to 5-0 this season.
Â
Klov-Nilsson made quick work of his opponent at No. 5 singles in a 6-1, 6-1 victory to push the Oregon match lead to 2-0. Freshman Ryoma Matsushita recorded the Ducks' third point of the night with his 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Since dropping his first match of the season, Matsushita has won four in a row.
Â
Oregon clinched the match on court two where senior Emmanuel Coste posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Eleftherios Neos. Quinn Vandecasteele won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to add the Ducks' fifth point of the match. Vandecasteele joins Coste and Klov-Nilsson at 4-0 in singles play this season.
Â
Portland (1-1) picked up its lone point in a tight, three-set decision at No. 4 singles.
Â
Charlton, No. 30 in the preseason singles rankings, toughed out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5) victory at the top spot to close out the match and secure the Ducks' sixth point. It marked Charlton's 85th career win combining his singles (43) and doubles (42) results.

Klov-Nilsson (4-0) has lost just 14 games in four matches this season … Wednesday's match was Oregon's first of three over the next five days.
Â
Up Next: The Ducks return to their home court for weekend matches against Eastern Washington (Feb. 20) and Washington (Feb. 21).
