Ducks Can't Overcome Slow Start at USC
02/22/21 | Men's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Playing for the third time in five days, Oregon couldn't overcome a sluggish start and dropped a 72-58 game to No. 19 USC Monday at the Galen Center.
How it Happened: USC (19-4, 13-3) led 43-22 at the half before Oregon (14-5, 9-4) tightened the game up.
The Ducks edged closer throughout the second half and drew within 16, 59-43, on Chandler Lawson's three-pointer with 7:52 remaining.
Moments later, LJ Figueroa and Eric Williams Jr. sparked an 11-3 run that cut USC's lead to 10, 66-56, with 4:59 to play, but Oregon could get no closer. Figueroa had a pair of three-pointers during the run, while Williams Jr. added five points.
What Stood Out: After struggling in the first half, Oregon outscored the Trojans 36-29 in the second half. Figueroa and Williams Jr. led the Ducks with 14 points each, while Chris Duarte added 11.
Notable: Will Richardson had a season-high four steals as the Ducks had 11 as a team. The 14 points were the most for Williams Jr. since he had 19 at Utah on Jan. 9.
Quotable:
Head Coach Dana Altman:
"They threw a knockout punch in the five minutes of the game…and we were just stuck in the mud."
Up Next: Oregon's road trip continues Thursday at Stanford (6 p.m.).
