Ducks Drop Series Finale In Seattle
04/18/21 | Softball
SEATTLE – The Oregon softball team came up short in its bid to split the four-game series with No. 6 Washington on Sunday afternoon, suffering a 6-1 loss in the series finale at Husky Softball Stadium.
Â
How it Happened: The No. 4 Ducks (28-8, 6-6 Pac-12) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, with freshman Hanna Delgado working a 10-pitch walk before stealing second and coming around to score on an RBI single by catcher Terra McGowan.
Â
McGowan threw out Washington star Sis Bates trying to steal in the bottom of the first to erase a leadoff single and help starter Brooke Yanez (14-4) work a scoreless frame. The Ducks got runners on the corners in the second but couldn't cash in, and the Huskies evened the game at one apiece in the bottom half on a solo home run.
Â
Washington (34-6, 12-2 Pac-12) jumped on Yanez in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-1 lead on a pair of doubles and a triple. Samaria Diaz took over for Oregon in the circle, and the Huskies made it 5-1 on a two-run homer before Diaz ended the frame with back-to-back strikeouts.
Â
The Ducks put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings but were unable to push any runs across against all-American Gabbie Plain, who came on in relief to get Washington out of the first-and-third jam in the second inning.
Â
Washington added an insurance run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly, and Plain put the Ducks down in order before working around a Delgado single in the seventh to secure the series win for the Huskies.
Â
Notable: Oregon outhit Washington, 9-8, but the Ducks had all singles while the Huskies came away with five extra-base hits … Delgado, McGowan and Alle Bunker each finished with two hits, and Haley Cruse, Mya Felder and Deijah Pangilinan each had one … Sunday marked the 12th multi-hit performance of the season for Bunker, the eighth for McGowan, and the fifth for Delgado … Delgado, Hannah Galey and Alyssa Brito each stole a base … Diaz struck out four in 3.2 innings of relief.
Â
On Deck: The Ducks return home to host Stanford in a four-game series at Jane Sanders Stadium beginning on Friday at 5 p.m. PT.
