Tjen Becomes Third All-American in UO History
06/09/21 | Women's Tennis
Oregon true freshman Janice Tjen earned ITA All-America status following her incredible run to the national semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship. She is the third Oregon player to receive All-America recognition and the second to do so as a singles player.
Â
Tjen joins Daria Panova and head coach Courtney Nagle as the only Ducks to gain All-America status, with the Panova and Nagle receiving the honor as a doubles pair in 2003 and Panova earning the honor as a singles player in 2003 and 2004.
Â
The freshman from Jakarta, Indonesia became the first Oregon player to reach the final four of the NCAA Singles Championship, with Panova previously holding the deepest run with a trip to the round of 16 in 2003. Tjen also became the first Pac-12 player since 2015 to advance to the national semifinals, taking down four ranked opponents in straight sets to get there. Â
Â
Tjen opened play at the singles championship with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 45 Indianna Spink of Arkansas, before knocking off the No. 4 overall seed in the tournament and 2019 national runner-up Katarina Jokic of Georgia, 6-1, 6-4. She advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Duke's Georgia Drummy, then secured a spot in the semifinals with another sweep, this time a 6-2, 6-3 win over NC State's Anna Rogers. Tjen battled hard against defending NCAA champion Estela Perez-Somarriba, but fell 7-6(4), 6-0.
Â
The Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Tjen finished the year ranked No. 6 in the ITA Singles Rankings after going 10-3 on the season against ranked opponents while turning in the highest winning percentage in a season by an Oregon player in singles play at .880. Her 22 wins are tied for 10th in a season in program history despite not having a fall season.
