Ducks Pull Off Reverse Sweep at Colorado
11/10/22 | Women's Volleyball
No. 14 Oregon was down 0-2 and faced a 10-point deficit late in the fourth before rallying for its eighth-straight win.
BOULDER, Colo. — Down 0-2 and then facing a 10-point deficit in the fourth, the 14th-ranked Oregon volleyball team rallied for a five-set road win (13-25, 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-12) Thursday night over Colorado. The Ducks are now 18-5 overall with a 12-3 record in Pac-12 play and extend their winning streak to eight in a row.
Gloria Mutiri recorded a season-high 17 kills while hitting .441 against the Buffs. Nine of Mutiri's kills came over the final two sets. Freshman Mimi Colyer led the team with 20 kills and Brooke Nuneviller added 16 kills—12 between sets three and four—in the comeback win.
Reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week Georgia Murphy picked up a match-high 17 digs, and was one of five Ducks to reach double figures. Daley McClellan had 14 digs for a second-consecutive outing while Colyer, Nuneviller and Hannah Pukis each collected 11 digs.
Thursday marked the Ducks' fourth five-set win of the season, and first reverse sweep since another road rally last season at USC (Oct. 24). The victory was also Oregon's sixth straight against Colorado.
How It Happened: Riding the momentum of their comeback in the fourth, the Ducks took an early 5-0 lead with Nuneviller at the service line. During the quick start, Mutiri put away two kills and Nuneviller had two aces. The cushion grew to as large as six points at 10-4 but Colorado (16-9, 8-7) put together a 7-1 run to tie things up at 11-all.
After calling a timeout, Oregon turned to Nuneviller for a kill and a lead at 12-11, and again for a 13-12 lead after the Buffs tied it. Mutiri and Colby Neal teamed up for a block to end the next rally to give the Ducks match point, and after a missed connection for Colorado fell to the floor, Oregon had completed the reverse sweep.
The Ducks lost the first two sets in a match for just the third time this season but responded with a four-point surge to start set three. Oregon never trailed in the set but the Buffs pulled to within one with UO leading 22-21 but two quick points for the Ducks re-established a little breathing room. On their second set point, the visitors got a kill from Karson Bacon to secure the frame and get on the scoreboard.
Bacon finished the match with seven kills, a new high during Pac-12 play this season.
After a rough start Thursday with two kills and hitting negative through the first two sets, Nuneviller got back on track in sets three and four with 12 of her 16 kills during that stretch. She and Mutiri combined for 10 of Oregon's 15 kills in the fourth.
The home team seemed to have shaken off the third-set loss, jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth and ultimately going ahead 15-5, its first double-digit lead of the set. Colorado led 19-9 before UO began to pick away at its deficit. With the help of a 7-1 run, capped by consecutive kills from Nuneviller, the Ducks were within four with Colorado leading 20-16.
Out of a timeout, the Buffs pushed their lead to 21-16 but Oregon responded with a four-run surge that featured a pair of blocks featuring Neal and the CU lead was down to one. Colorado won the next two points for a 23-20 advantage, just two points away from victory, but the Ducks rattled off another 4-0 run for its first lead of the set at 24-23.
Colorado won the next rally to even the set but back-to-back kills from Mutiri and Bacon, respectively, forced a decisive fifth set.
Notable: With her 10th kill of the match, Mutiri reached 600 kills during her Oregon career. Nuneviller is now tied for sixth in UO history with 125 service aces. She also recorded the 65th double-double of her career, and team-leading 17th of the season, in Thursday's match.
Up Next: Oregon will close out the long weekend Sunday afternoon at Utah. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. (PT) on the Utah Live Stream. Click HERE for the Ducks' full schedule.
