Oregon Picks Up Road Win at Southern
11/14/22 | Women's Basketball
BATON ROUGE, La. — No. 21 Oregon got 15 points from Ahlise Hurst and a double-double from Phillipina Kyei on its way to defeating Southern 83-46 on Monday as part of the Pac-12/SWAC Legacy Series at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Hurst drained 5-of-7 three-pointers, including three in the second quarter, in producing her season-high point total. Kyei added 10 points and a season-best 10 rebounds for her third career double-double and first by a Duck this season.
Endyia Rogers, who was held scoreless in the first half, dropped 14 third-quarter points to help UO to an 18-0 stretch that spanned from the second quarter into the third. At one point, Rogers was responsible for seven unanswered points to begin the second half.
"Endyia was a big part of that (second-half run)," said head coach Kelly Graves. "Boy, in that second half, she really took off and it was good to see and we followed suit. She's one of our leaders and when she's playing with a ton of energy, so do we."
How It Happened: The Ducks (3-0) never trailed in the game and shot 50.0 percent or better in three of four quarters, hitting at a game-high 64.3 percent in the fourth quarter. In the second half, the Ducks shot 18-for-32 (56.2 percent).
Oregon scored 20 points or more in each of the last three quarters and limited the Jags to 13 or fewer in all four periods.
The Ducks forced 10 first-half turnovers, resulting in 14 points, while hitting four three-pointers in the second quarter to open a 38-24 lead at the half. Hurst drained three of Oregon's four three-point shots in the second quarter.
"It always feels good when it's a good shooting night," Hurst said.
Oregon forced Southern (0-3) into 16 turnovers and owned a 27-7 edge in points off turnovers. The Ducks also enjoyed a 39-23 rebounding advantage while UO's bench outscored the Jaguars 33-17.
Freshman Chance Gray was one of four Ducks in double figures, as she finished with 12 points. Te-Hina Paopao chipped in nine points to go with seven rebounds.
Who Stood Out: The Ducks were plus-42 with Paopao on the floor while Grace VanSlooten was plus-41. VanSlooten, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, posted nine rebounds and five points while handing out four assists.
Hurst's five three-pointers marked a high for any Duck this season, as UO hit a season-best 11 three-point shots. Kyei hit on 4-of-7 shots from the field and hauled in 10 rebounds with a block. Kyei, getting her third straight start, recorded a plus-31 rating.
Quotable:
Head coach Kelly Graves on the night overall…
"I thought our execution was a heck of a lot better in the second half. We had eight turnovers in the first half, three of which were illegal screens, but we took care of the ball a little better (in the second half). We didn't shoot it well tonight for the most part, I thought we had some pretty good looks but just weren't shooting it. And we weren't shooting it that well from the line, and we had been so efficient from the line this year. That seemed out of character, but at least we are getting to the line a lot.
"That was a good win. This was a really good win and a big crowd. They made us work and I like their team, they've got a chance to win their conference and make the NCAA Tournament. They'll finish in the top two or three in their league."
Graves on the day as a whole and touring Southern's campus as part of the Pac-12/SWAC Legacy Series…
"Today was a great day. I really enjoyed getting to know people here at the university and seeing the campus and getting to learn about the history. It was a great day and a good win."
Graves on the upcoming schedule…
"Once we get into Portland, it's going to get real and the competition takes a big jump. We've got to clean up some stuff in our zone, I don't think our zone was great tonight. Although when we started to pressure out of it, I thought we did some good stuff. I like where we are at right now. I think we are playing pretty good basketball, we are sharing it well – 21 assists tonight and 10 turnovers – we will take that ratio any time."
Up Next: The Ducks return to Matthew Knight Arena to host Southern Utah on Monday at 6 p.m. PT.
