Ducks Make It A Perfect 10 Straight
11/18/22 | Women's Volleyball
Oregon has won 10 in a row and all 10 of its home matches this season after a five-set win Friday over UCLA.
EUGENE, Ore. — The No. 12 Oregon volleyball team won the last two sets to post a five-set win over UCLA on Friday, the second time this season the Ducks beat the Bruins by winning sets four and five.
Down two sets to one and tied 12-12 in the fourth, the Ducks pulled away to win the set and then followed the same script in the fifth, pulling away from an 8-8 tie to win the match. Oregon extended its win streak to 10 matches and remained perfect in Matthew Knight Arena at 10-0 this season with the 25-18, 25-27, 16-25, 25-22, 15-10 victory.
"I just really liked our fight, I liked our response, I liked our maturity," UO coach Matt Ulmer said. "Things weren't going well for us but we were able to find a way. That's a pretty neat characteristic to have."
The Ducks improved to 20-5 overall and 14-3 Pac-12 play, staying within two games of first-place Stanford in the race for the conference title.

How It Happened: Oregon started well, going up 3-0 in the first set after consecutive kills by Gloria Mutiri and 9-4 after points by Brooke Nuneviller and Kiari Robey. UCLA rallied to lead 15-12 at the media timeout, but Oregon scored four straight out of the break, capped by a block from Karson Bacon and Hannah Pukis and a kill by Bacon. After the Bruins rallied back in front, 17-16, the Ducks finished off the set with a 9-1 run, winning it on back-to-back kills by Nuneviller. Freshman Mimi Colyer served six straight points during the run, sustaining it through two different UCLA timeouts.
"Pretty mature," Ulmer said. "For us, we're really trying to go one point at a time. And you can see why we need to; we can get down, but we can go on a 10-point run if we can really focus in — and against really good teams. So, I like when they play in the moment. We are definitely our best selves when we do that."

The Ducks played from behind most of the next two sets. UCLA jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the second, Oregon fought back within 11-10 and the Bruins broke it open again at 16-10. Down 24-17, Oregon showed impressive fight by fighting off seven straight set points to tie it 24-24, and they fought off another while down 25-24 before UCLA clinched the set. The third set again saw the Bruins start fast, as they took a 15-7 lead. This time the Ducks weren't able to mount a rally, and UCLA closed the set with a 6-1 run to take the lead in the match.
Oregon stabilized in the fourth, getting two kills from Mutiri during a four-point run to lead 8-5. The Ducks scored four straight again after it was 12-12, with Nuneviller providing three kills during the run. Yet another kill by Nuneviller made it 24-18, and though UCLA fought off four set points, the Ducks clinched the set with a point by Robey and evened the match.
Set five began by going back and forth, with neither team leading by more than two points on the way to an 8-8 tie. But Nuneviller gave Oregon a 9-8 lead, then took over serve and didn't give it up until after the Ducks led 13-8. Kills by Mutiri and Colyer clinched the match for the Ducks.

"At the end of the day, you have complete control with the ball in your hand — you start the play," Nuneviller said of her service run to give Oregon control of the fifth set. "And I think that's just how I feel in those moments, especially at the end. We were only up by one when I went back there. I just know as an outside hitter, passing short balls is not my favorite thing, so I'm like, 'well, we'll see if they can do it.' And then you kind of just start to feel it the more and more you get into it."
Notable: The Bruins played the match without starting setter Matti McKissock, who was out sick. In her place UCLA featured a pair of setters in Mokihana Tufono and Kate Lane; Tufono tied a program record with eight services aces in the match. … Nuneviller finished with 19 kills and 10 digs for her 19th double-double of the season, and Colyer had 17 kills with 19 digs for her 10th double-double. … Pukis had a season-high 59 assists for the Ducks, three off her career high of 62 set in 2019 while at WSU. … Mutiri's 15 kills were two off her season high.

"Sometimes when you get that lineup change it kind of gets them going and makes them harder to scout, made them different. Things that we had success with the first time weren't as available this time, so you're trying to figure that out too. And they have different servers back there. It's just a different rhythm. So I thought they played excellent."

"It's funny because I don't think she's really had to do that all season, and she's a freshman. I was trying to talk to her in the first half of the match and she's like, 'I just need to get through it.' I'm like, 'What can I do to help you?' And she's like, 'I just need to get through it.' And I'm like, 'You're right.' And then Matt got on her a little bit more than he ever has. And it's really impressive how she responded in that moment. Ever since then, she started taking really big swings. She really wasn't afraid to make errors. … It's just really special to see freshmen respond like that. And she's one of the best in the country, if not the best."
