Late Surge Sparks Bounceback Win
11/27/22 | Women's Basketball
The Oregon women used a 13-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to gain separation in an 86-78 win Sunday over Michigan State.
PORTLAND — Despite some tense moments in the second half, the Oregon women's basketball never trailed Sunday and bounced back from its first loss with an 86-78 win over Michigan State to close out the Phil Knight Invitational at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Four Ducks scored in double figures, led by Endyia Rogers with 19 points, who hit back-to-back three-pointers after the Spartans rallied to a 68-68 tie early in the fourth quarter. That sparked a game-clinching 13-2 run by the UO women, who also got career highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds from Phillipina Kyei, 14 points with six assists by Te-Hina Paopao and 12 points with seven rebounds from Grace VanSlooten.
Three days after leading by eight in the fourth quarter before losing to North Carolina, the Ducks (5-1) weathered the storm Sunday to beat Michigan State.
"I learned we're resilient," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "The first loss is always tough; it takes the wind out of you a little bit. We had a bad practice the next day — it affected us. But it was great to see us get back up."

How It Happened: Kyei established herself from the start, taking shots on Oregon's first three possessions and scoring twice. A three-pointer by Chance Gray followed by a Paopao basket off a turnover put the Ducks up 12-4, and two more scores by Paopao made it 21-12. The second sparked a 9-0 run by the Ducks as they took a 27-12 lead after one quarter.
"We challenged Paopao and Endyia — in games like this, they've got to play well and step up," Graves said. "And they did. I'm really proud of them. That's what you need out of experienced guards."

After Rogers got to the basket to make it 29-12 early in the second, Michigan State put together a 16-4 keyed by two of the Ducks' six turnovers in the period. The Spartans pressured the Ducks the length of the court for most of the game, but Rogers hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to stabilize the UO women and they took a 45-37 lead at halftime.
"At times we had issues with the press a little bit," Rogers said. "But once we got it across halfcourt we were able to run our stuff and get a great shot."
The Spartans closed within 45-42 early in the third, before another three by Rogers provided Oregon's first field goal of the second half. A basket by VanSlooten got Oregon's lead out to 55-46, and after the Spartans closed the gap again Paopao hit a three for a 58-51 lead. VanSlooten scored twice to get Oregon's advantage back into double digits, 63-53, but Michigan State had the last two baskets of the third quarter to get within 63-57.

That momentum carried over into the fourth; despite an early three-pointer from Ahlise Hurst, the Ducks were outscored 9-2 in the opening minutes of the period and Graves called timeout with the score tied 68-68 and 7:17 left to play. Rogers made a three out of the break and another on Oregon's next possession, sparking a 13-2 run that also included another three from Hurst and a bucket by Kyei. That made it 81-70, and the Spartans got no closer than six the rest of the way.
"Tonight I was feeling it from three," said Rogers, who previously made four threes in a game five times, before setting a new career high with five Sunday. "I wasn't thinking about anything, I wasn't tentative — if I felt like I was open, I shot it."

"Really proud of our team, how we finished tonight. It was different than the other night. Really proud of our team. … We played two NCAA Tournament caliber teams, and played well."
Senior guard Endyia Rogers on setting the tone Sunday with Paopao
"(Graves) challenges us to be great leaders, even when things go bad; never get too high, never get too low. That's one of the things I'm still learning. But I feel like today I bounced back from the last game and left it in the past."

Notable: Kyei's double-double was her second of the season and the fourth of her career. … Paopao came into the game leading the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 8.5:1. She ended up with six assists against one turnover Sunday. … Prior to the game, the Ducks met briefly with WNBA star Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley; Vandersloot played for Graves at Gonzaga.
