Richardson Records the First Men’s Basketball Triple-Double in 20 Years
12/10/22 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. — Will Richardson did something no Ducks player has since 2002, while leading Oregon to a 78-65 win over Nevada.
"It's just a blessing," said Richardson. "I've never played on a team that cared so much about somebody else. I needed one rebound and the whole team is trying to 'tip the ball to Will, tip the ball to Will,' it just feels good. I'm trying to be a leader and my team is rocking with me until the end. So it's exciting."
Richardson quickly eclipsed 10 points and 10 assists, a new career high, and need one rebound in the final nine minutes of play to reach the mark. With 30 seconds left, he secured his 10th rebound of the night, becoming the first men's basketball player to record a triple-double since Luke Jackson had 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists vs. Florida A&M on Dec. 20, 2002. It's just the fourth triple-double in school history – Jackson finished his career with two, and Ron Lee recorded the first in school history on Dec. 7, 1972, with 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists vs. Montana State.
How It Happened: Oregon started hot from the field led by Guerrier, who hit four of his first three-point attempts to spark the Ducks run. Oregon was on fire from the field and went on a 10-0 run five minutes into the game to give UO their largest lead of the half, a 30-13 advantage.
After controlling most of the half, the Ducks struggled late and Nevada went on multiple runs of their own to cut the lead down to single digits. At the break, it was Oregon 36, Nevada 29. Guerrier had 14 points and Kenan Blackshear had 12 to lead the Wolf Pack.
The Ducks started the second half on a seven-point run and did not look back. Guerrier stayed hot from the field and finished with 26 points, scoring 12 in the second half. Richardson entered the second half with six points, five rebounds and seven assists, setting up triple-double watch. He quickly got to double-digits in points, before dishing out his 10th assist, setting a new career high. His ninth rebound of the game came with 10 minutes left on the clock, needing one rebound in the final 10 minutes to reach the milestone.
With three minutes left, Coach Altman subbed out the other four players on the court, leaving Richardson on after he told coach he was good to finish the game. As time expired, Nevada took one last shot with 30 seconds on the clock, setting up a defensive rebound opportunity that Richardson took advantage of, sealing the victory with a stat line that Oregon hasn't seen for 20 years.
Quotable: "I'm really happy for him," said Head Coach Dana Altman. His five-game stretch here, his leadership is showing, he's getting the guys to play as a team. He's done as well leadership-wise as anybody we've had here."
Notable: Oregon blocked 11 shots, the most 2017. Guerrier net a game-high 26 points, making five three-pointers.
Up Next: The Ducks stay home through Christmas, hosting UC Riverside on Wednesday at 6 p.m. PT.
