Three Double-Doubles Highlight Win
12/15/22 | Women's Basketball
Grace VanSlooten, Phillipina Kyei and Endyia Rogers each had a double-double Thursday as Oregon beat Eastern Washington, 88-38.
EUGENE, Ore. — Grace VanSlooten scored a career-high 26 points and was one of three Ducks to record a double-double Thursday as the Oregon women's basketball team beat Eastern Washington, 88-38, before 5,584 fans in Matthew Knight Arena.
Phillipina Kyei and Endyia Rogers each scored 11 points and set a career high in rebounds — Kyei with 18, Rogers with 10 — and VanSlooten also grabbed 10 rebounds. Three other Ducks scored in double figures as Oregon outscored the Eagles 48-4 in the paint; EWU tried to counter that imbalance with three-point shooting but finished 5-of-31 behind the arc.
Though the final margin of victory was impressive, Oregon's 45.5 percent shooting was actually below the Ducks' season average of 47.9 percent from the floor. All the missed shots and the teams' combined 22 turnovers led to a somewhat disjointed pace at times, and the Ducks were content but not overjoyed with how they played.
"I'm glad we got a victory; we did some really good things tonight," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "It just didn't seem like anybody, including the coaches, was having a whole lot of fun out on the court. It was like putting teeth for a little bit there. …
"That's one of our strengths: We play with a lot of passion, a lot of energy, a lot of fun. So we've just got to get that back. It's one game."
Ahlise Hurst hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11 points Thursday, while Taya Hanson and Chance Gray scored 10 each. Kyei dished out a career-high five assists to lead the Ducks, Rogers and Jennah Isai had four assists each and Te-Hina Paopao added five points, seven rebounds and three assists.

How It Happened: VanSlooten scored five points during a 7-0 run as Oregon took the lead for good at 7-3. Three-pointers by Hanson and Hurst late in the quarter helped the Ducks lead 24-15 after one.
The UO women broke the game open in the second quarter by holding the Eagles to five points on 2-of-15 shooting. Paopao hit a three-pointer during an 8-0 run that made it 35-17, and VanSlooten scored twice as the Ducks finished the first half with a 7-0 run to lead 42-20 at the break.
VanSlooten and Kyei each had two buckets during a 10-0 run to open the third quarter, and Hanson had five points during another 10-run run by the Ducks to cap the quarter. Oregon led 67-25 at that point and held EWU to five points again in the third, on 1-of-16 shooting.
In the fourth, Oregon built its largest lead of the game at 84-32, using an 8-0 run that included a three by Hurst, a three-point play from Gray and a putback for VanSlooten.
Notable: Forward Taylor Hosendove played four first-half minutes but didn't play in the second after an injury issue arose during halftime. … Paopao had a season-high three turnovers, along with her three assists. She came into the night leading the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio at 8.75:1. Her updated ratio of 5.43:1 still was better than anyone else in the country entering Thursday. … Rogers also led the nation in a statistical category entering Thursday, in her case with 57.14 percent three-point shooting. She was 1-of-3 in the game, putting her season average at 55.3 percent. … Rogers surpassed 1,200 points in her career in the game, while Hanson and Hosendove each reached 800 career points.

Head coach Kelly Graves on managing minutes for the first of four games in seven days
"We had that in mind. Unfortunately Taylor got hurt and was unable to give us more meaningful minutes in the game. She played well, up until she got a couple fouls, but she would have played a lot more. So that hurt; we only had eight people."
Freshman forward Grace VanSlooten on setting a new career high with 26 points
"Coach told me to be aggressive. And so I think I really took that in mind. I was aggressive and it was working. So I mean, I just kept doing that. My teammates did a great job of finding me and feeding the ball, so all props go to them."
Up Next: The Ducks wrap up a four-game homestand by hosting Charleston on Sunday at noon.
