Sharpshooting Ducks Sink Pilots
12/17/22 | Men's Basketball
Oregon matched its season high with 12 three-pointers Saturday in a 78-56 win over Portland.
EUGENE, Ore. — On a night the opposition wasn't about to let N'Faly Dante have his way in the post, Oregon's shooters stepped up.
Portland packed the paint defensively Saturday, and the UO men's basketball team responded by making 12-of-22 three-point attempts in a 78-56 victory at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks (7-5) shot 53.1 percent overall while holding the Pilots to 37.7 percent shooting — including 5-of-23 from three-point range.
"We have Dante; most teams are going to double-team him if they're smart," said Rivaldo Soares, who made 4-of-5 threes on the night. "You've just got to be ready for those type of plays. I was ready tonight — a bunch of us were."
Soares finished with a team-high 16 points, and Brennan Rigsby also hit four three-pointers on his way to 14 points. Will Richardson scored 12 and dished out a career-high 12 assists, Lök Wor set a new career high with nine points and Tyrone Williams matched his high with the Ducks with eight points.
How It Happened: The Ducks used a 10-0 run early in the game to lead 13-5, a run that included the first three of the night for both Rigsby and Soares. Oregon's defense limited Portland to just one field goal in a stretch of 7:03, during which the UO men jumped out to an 18-7 lead. Threes on consecutive possessions by Soares and Rigsby made it 24-14, and the Ducks again got back-to-back threes to go up 33-20 — in that case by Kel'el Ware and Soares. A three from Wur got the lead out to 36-20, and the Ducks led 37-25 at halftime.
"It felt good to finally watch the ball go in," said Soares, who was 7-of-33 from three this season entering Saturday. "Your teammates are happy for you, everybody's happy for you. It was about time."
The Ducks nearly went four minutes to open the second half without a field goal, before Williams scored with 16:16 left in the half for a 42-30 lead. An 8-0 run that included another three by Rigsby and buckets from Richardson and Williams put Oregon up 53-35, and a dunk from Ware followed by a three from Richardson made it 61-42. The Pilots upped the defensive pressure to force some turnovers and close within 64-52, on a night the Ducks turned it over 18 times. But Oregon got the lead to 20 at 72-52 with an 8-0 run, which was capped by an alley oop from Richardson to Dante and a bucket by Richardson.
Notable: Oregon's three-game winning streak is its longest of the season. … Richardson had three steals Saturday to give him 159 in his career, fourth-most in UO history and one behind No. 3 Luke Jackson (160, 2000-04). … Richardson's 12 assists put him at 411 for his career, eighth-most in UO history and also just behind Jackson, who had 424. … Richardson made the 127th appearance of his career, tied for sixth in UO history with Maarty Leunen (2004-08).

"They did a good job. Not many mistakes; Tyrone had the one turnover and Lök didn't have any. .. Really happy with that. And they both went to the boards. I thought that was a big key."

"We've got guys that are handling it too much; we want guys to feel confident with what they're doing, and we've got some guys handling the ball more than they should. We had a couple full-court situations there where we had no idea what we were trying to accomplish … A couple more ball-handlers definitely would help."
