Confident Ducks Fly South For Holidays
12/18/22 | Women's Basketball
Oregon left for the San Diego Invitational on Sunday evening after beating College of Charleston earlier in the day, 97-33.
EUGENE, Ore. — The sunny skies of San Diego beckoned the Oregon women's basketball team as the Ducks headed out on the road Sunday evening, and the team's mood matched that forecast after a 97-33 win earlier in the day over College of Charleston in Matthew Knight Arena.
No. 16 Oregon (9-1) shot nearly 60 percent as a team and held the Cougars to 20 percent shooting, as the Ducks won for the sixth time this season by 37 or more points. The Ducks used a 17-0 run to take a 26-5 lead in the first quarter, and they held the Cougars to three points in the second quarter.
"That was about as good of basketball as we've played here, since I've been here," said UO coach Kelly Graves, whose team plays Tuesday and Wednesday in the San Diego Invitational. "Everybody was involved, everybody was touching it, everybody was playing well. We got out in transition. Our defense was on point. That was a great stretch of basketball."
The Ducks followed up their 50-point win Thursday over Eastern Washington with a 64-point margin Sunday. And they felt much better about their execution, with the team recording 28 assists on 34 field goals and each player dishing out at least one assist. Ahlise Hurst, Te-Hina Paopao and Endyia Rogers each scored 15 points to lead five players in double figures, and Phillipina Kyei had eight points with 13 rebounds.

"I think after our last game, we really needed this game to kind of get back in the flow of our offense, figure out our momentum again," said freshman Grace VanSlooten, who added 13 points with seven rebounds. "So we're going into these two bigger games (in San Diego) more confident."
How It Happened: Rogers hit a three-pointer on the game's first possession as the Ducks began the afternoon on a 7-0 run. It was 9-5 when Oregon exploded for 17 straight, a run that included three-pointers by Paopao and Chance Gray, plus seven points from VanSlooten. The second quarter featured 11 of the Ducks' 24 missed field-goal attempts in the game, but the UO women clamped down defensively to allow just a single three-pointer in the period. And they closed the first half on an 8-0 run that featured another three for both Paopao and Gray.
"We did a great job sharing the ball, and that helped us get that lead," Paopao said.

In the second half, Oregon made an incredible 76 percent of its shots. Rogers scored eight points in the third, and the bench took over in the fourth, when Hurst scored 12 while Taya Hanson and Taylor Hosendove each had six points and four rebounds. The Ducks had nine assists on nine field goals in the final period, with Hosendove dishing out three while Hurst, Hanson and Jennah Isai had two each.
"That was just a well-played game by the Ducks," Graves said. "I mean, 28 assists, eight turnovers — you can't ask for more than that. I think everybody on the team got an assist; just really unselfish. And then we shot it pretty well. So, good game. We needed that."
Notable: Oregon's five-game win streak is the team's longest of the season. … With two assists and no turnovers, Paopao raised her NCAA-leading assist-to-turnover ratio to 5.71:1. … Rogers came into the day third in the country in three-point shooting at 55.26 percent, and was 2-of-4 in the game to enter next week at 54.8 percent.

"I think everybody feels good about their performances tonight individually. So yeah, the trip down will be fun. I think everybody will be excited. We are going to San Diego, and I haven't even looked at the weather but I'm just guessing that it'll be nicer than here — just a guess. … We're looking forward to it. It's obviously going to be a big jump in competition."

"Any time you get back the initial diagnosis 'it's a knee issue,' those are always scary. Thank goodness it was kind of a minor issue and she was able to play."
