Flat Start Dooms Ducks In Defeat
12/20/22 | Men's Basketball
Oregon rallied within two in the final minutes but couldn't make up a 17-point halftime deficit Tuesday.
EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon gamely rallied in the second half Tuesday, but the Ducks were undone by a flat start and 3-of-19 three-point shooting in a loss to Utah Valley in Matthew Knight Arena, 77-72.
Three days after going 11-of-22 from three in a win over Portland, the UO men couldn't summon a similar performance Tuesday. At one point they missed 12 straight from long range; that along with nine first-half turnovers contributed to a 17-point halftime deficit from which Oregon could only claw back within two in the final 90 seconds.
"There's no way to sugar-coat it," UO coach Dana Altman said. "First half, we just buried ourselves."

How It Happened: Oregon's shooting woes weren't apparent early. The teams went back-and-forth in the opening minutes, and though the Ducks found themselves down 18-12 at one point, Brennan Rigsby made a three to get it back to a one-possession game. But that would be the only three for the UO men until well into the second half.
After Richardson tied it at 18-18, Utah Valley made its next six shots — all within its next six possessions — to jump out to a 32-22 lead. Oregon's last field goal of the first half came with 5:49 on the clock, and the Wolverines stretched their lead to 41-24 at halftime.
The Ducks struggled to make up ground in the early minutes of the second half. With 11:47 to play, they still trailed by 16 at 56-40. But from there the tide began to turn, as Oregon ripped off an 18-6 run to get within 62-58. Quincy Guerrier scored the last seven points of that run, including the Ducks' first three-pointer after 12 straight misses.
Guerrier again hit a three to cut the margin to four a few moments later, making it 68-64. After a couple of defensive stops, Guerrier hit two free throws to make it a two-point game. But the Ducks couldn't get another stop over the final 90 seconds, and Utah Valley escaped with the upset.

Notable: Richardson had three steals to give him 162 in his career, third all-time in UO history. On Tuesday he passed Luke Jackson (160, 2000-04) and Richardson now trails only Kenya Wilkins (213, 1993-97) and Payton Pritchard (211, 2016-20). … Richardson made his 128th career appearance with the Ducks, sixth-most in UO history and breaking a tie with Maarty Leunen (127, 2004-08). … Richardson is up to 415 career assists, No. 8 in UO history just behind Jackson, who had 424.
Up Next: The Ducks resume Pac-12 play by hosting Oregon State on Dec. 31 (5 p.m., Pac-12 Network).
