Early miscues, late big inning hurt Ducks
02/18/22 | Baseball
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Adam Maier allowed just two runs while striking out nine in five innings in his Oregon debut, but two Ducks errors and a pair of hit batters helped San Diego build an early lead before a seven-run seventh inning broke the game open in a 11-1 Toreros win.
How It Happened: San Diego struck first after Oregon stranded a pair of runners on base in the top of the first. After a leadoff single and wild pitch, Chase Meidroth lined a two-run shot over the left-field wall.
The Toreros tacked on two more in the second with some help from the Ducks. After a leadoff strikeout, Josh Kasevich pulled first baseman Jacob Walsh off the bag for his second error of the game. Starter Adam Maier hit the next two batters and then allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. USD made it 4-0 with their lone base hit in the second inning.
Oregon cut the lead to three in the top of the fifth. After a Tanner Smith walk, freshman Jacob Walsh singled sharply to center field where the Dustin Allen booted the ball allowing Smith to score from first.
USD (1-0) put the game away in the bottom of the seventh. The Toreros scored seven runs in the inning to push the lead to 10.
Inside the Box Score: Oregon's first five batters combined to go 7-for-19 (.368) with three walks, while the last four spots in the order went hitless (0-for-12) with three walks and hit-by-pitch … The Ducks' leadoff hitter (Smith) and two-hole hitter (Walsh) combined to reach base five times with Smith going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and Walsh collecting his first two career hits in four at-bats … Smith's two hits gave him 38 career multi-hit games … Hall is just the eighth Oregon freshman to finish the season opener with multiple hits in the modern era and the first since Anthony Hall in 2020.
Fresh faces: In addition to Maier and Walsh, five other players saw their first career action as a Duck … Designated hitter Brennan Milone, a transfer from South Carolina, got the start batting in the three-hole and went 1-for-4 … Infielder Drew Cowley and utility William Riley both pinch hit late in the game … Relief pitchers Dylan Sabia, a transfer from Central Connecticut State, and Matt Dallas, a transfer from Lane Community College, both took the mound for the first time as a Duck in the seventh inning.
On Deck: Game two of the series is Saturday at 5 p.m. at Fowler Park. Andrew Mosiello takes the mound for the Ducks while USD counters with Brycen Mautz.
