Ducks Drop Series Opener
05/06/22 | Softball
STANFORD, Calif. – Stevie Hansen held Stanford to five hits, but two of them were home runs as No. 22 Oregon fell to Stanford, 3-0, Friday night at Smith Family Stadium.
How it Happened: Stanford hit solo home runs in the second and third innings for a 2-0 lead before Oregon's best scoring opportunity, which came in the fourth inning.
Terra McGowan led off the fourth with a single and Allee Bunker reached on an error. Ariel Carlson's slow-rolling fielder's choice moved both runners into scoring position with one out. Rachel Cid then hit a grounder to third and McGowan was thrown out at the plate, though replays appeared to show McGowan slid under the catcher's tag. Gabby Herrera grounded back to the mound with runners on second and third to end the threat.
The Cardinal (34-16, 9-10) added one more run in the sixth.
Hansen, 12-8, struck out four and didn't walk any in five innings.
Noteworthy: Carlson had the other hit for Oregon (29-17, 8-14), a single in the second inning. … Jordan Dail came on in relief of Hansen in the sixth and got the final three outs, including one by strikeout. That was her 353rd strikeout as a Duck, which leaves her just four strikeouts shy of entering Oregon's career top 10. … The Ducks didn't walk a batter for the 10th time this season.
On Deck: Game two between Oregon and Stanford will be Saturday at 2 p.m. (Pac-12 Network).
