Oregon Rolls to Season-Opening Sweep of PSU
01/20/23 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon kicked off its 2023 dual season with a 4-0 sweep of Portland State Friday afternoon at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks (1-0) were able to clinch a tightly contested doubles point, as Courts 1 and 3 both went to tiebreakers. After Uxia Martinez Moral and Misaki Kobayashi gave the Ducks an early one-match edge, winning 6-2 at No. 2 doubles, Karin Young and Myah Petchey pulled out a 7-6 (5) victory at No. 3 against Nika Beukers and Makoto Ohara to give Oregon the doubles point.
UO's No. 1 doubles pair of Sophie Luescher and Ares Teixido Garcia went unfinished with the tiebreak score sitting at 3-3. Both Duck pairs faced a 4-2 deficit before forcing their respective tiebreakers.
"They had a great a great comeback, both (Nos.) 1 and 3 doubles did," head coach Courtney Nagle said. "I think they were down 4-2 in both of their matches, and they evened it out and got into position to win. They started to play better, hung in there when they needed to and really came out on fire."
In singles action, the Ducks quickly claimed three straight-set victories to clinch a season-opening victory. Young, a sophomore, rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles against Nell Arendt before Teixido Garcia claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 3.
Martinez Moral clinched the fourth and final singles point as she cruised 6-1, 6-2 over Emily Reese at the fifth spot.
"We want to make the tournament again, obviously, and see if can do even better than last year and continue to get better as a team, see if we can knock out top-20 teams" said Nagle. "That would be a very good growth piece for us, as well."
Luescher, Petchey and Kobayashi each won the opening set in their respective matches, but went unfinished. Oregon improves to 26-0 all-time against the Vikings (0-2).
The Ducks will conclude their two-match weekend Sunday against Seattle U at 11 a.m. All home matches are open to the public and are held at the Student Tennis Center on the UO campus.
