Poor Shooting Dooms Ducks at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. — Oregon tested No. 3 Stanford Sunday, but a season-low 25 percent shooting from the field doomed the Ducks in a 62-54 loss at Maples Pavilion.
Phillipina Kyei logged a 12-point, 17-rebound double-double, helping the Ducks (14-7, 5-5) to a 54-52 rebounding edge over the Cardinal (21-2, 9-1).
"I told (the team) after the game that I'm really proud of them," said head coach Kelly Graves. "They out-rebounded Stanford, one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Twenty-three offensive rebounds, it shows we didn't quit and kept fighting.
"Three players – Grace (VanSlooten) had 11, Philli (Kyei) had 12 and Chance (Gray) had 12 – that's two freshmen and a sophomore. They came in here and they fought. But you can't come in here and shoot the way we did and expect to beat anybody, especially Stanford on the road."
Kyei was one of three Ducks in double figures, joined by Gray with 12 points and VanSlooten with 11. VanSlooten hauled in six rebounds and Gray connected on 2-of-3 3-point tries.
UO shot just 2-of-16 in the first quarter, while attempting just one 3-point shot. The Cardinal defense recorded five blocks in limiting the Oregon offense to its lowest first-quarter point total of the season (7).
Oregon trailed by as many as 15 in the second quarter, but finished the half on a 9-0 run to trim the Cardinal lead to 27-21 at the break. After shooting 17.7 percent from the field (7-for-40) in the first half, UO would miss its first nine shots to start the second half.
The Cardinal, led by a triple-double by Cameron Brink, recorded 13 blocks in holding the Ducks to 20-of-80 from the field. Brink finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks.
Oregon outscored Stanford 17-16 in the fourth quarter, shooting a game-high 33.3 percent and 2-for-5 from three.
Notable: Oregon scored a season-low 54 points while shooting a season-low 25.0 percent from the field … five of the Ducks' seven losses have come to ranked teams, with four in the top 10 … Kyei produced her team-leading sixth double-double and is responsible for six of UO's nine double-doubles on the year.
Quotable:
UO coach Kelly Graves on his team's execution
"I thought defensively we were really good, we did enough defensively to win this game. I thought we executed the game plan, but part of the game plan isn't 20-of-80 from the field."
UO coach Kelly Graves on the takeaways from the game and weekend
"We've got to learn from it, I think we will, but we're 5-5 and just scratching and clawing trying to figure a way to get some wins. Overall I feel okay about the trip, we got a split. A sweep in the Bay Area is very hopeful, but we need more from our veterans."
Up Next: The Ducks return home to face Colorado Friday (7 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
