Starters Set Tone In Exhibition Win
10/29/23 | Women's Basketball
The Oregon women's basketball team beat Southern Oregon on Sunday, 76-55.
EUGENE, Ore. — Chance Gray scored all 17 of her points in the first half, leading four scorers in double figures as the Oregon women's basketball team won an exhibition game against Southern Oregon on Sunday, 76-55, in Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks' five starters led the way, with transfer guard Peyton Scott adding 14 points, Grace VanSlooten scoring 13, freshman Sofia Bell hitting double figures with 10 and Phillipina Kyei finishing with eight points and seven rebounds. The UO women open their regular season Monday, Nov. 6, when they host Northern Arizona at 6 p.m.
"The unit that's going to play the majority of the time, I thought we looked pretty good," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "I thought we did some good things tonight, especially defensively."
With program alum Sabrina Ionescu on hand in the stands Sunday, Oregon held Southern Oregon to 31.3 percent shooting in the first half to lead 51-26, then pushed the lead to as many as 34 early in the third quarter before rotating liberally. The Ducks shot an even 50 percent in the first half, including 7-of-14 from three-point range, with Gray hitting three on her way to 17 points at the break.
VanSlooten had two three-pointers in the first half. She only attempted one her entire freshman season, but she spent this offseason working to improve her perimeter game.
"She wants to be a pro, and to be a pro she's going to have to be a player that plays on the perimeter a little bit," Graves said. "As such, she's going to need to make that shot. She can, and they looked good."
Bell also made two three-pointers, and had four assists. Transfer guard Kennedi Williams led the Ducks with six assists, and Kennedy Basham was another spark off the bench with seven points, five rebounds and four blocked shots.
