Second-Half Surge Propels Bounceback Win
11/21/23 | Women's Basketball
RENO, Nev. — Oregon dominated the second half against Nevada Tuesday night, out-scoring the Wolf Pack 43-15 over the final 20 minutes on its way to a 76-47 bounceback victory at Lawlor Events Center.
Leading 33-32 at halftime, the Ducks scored 19 unanswered points across the second and third quarters in building a 17-point edge through three frames. UO's defense stymied the Wolf Pack offense in the second half, holding Nevada to 5-for-39 from the field (12.8 percent). Meanwhile the Ducks' offense fired at a 58.6 percent clip (17-for-29) over the same period.
"I think it started in the second five minutes of the second quarter," said head coach Kelly Graves after the game. "I just think we were able to control the pace … We were limiting them to one shot and then we came down offensively and did a great job of executing. A lot of really good things we did tonight. This was a good win."

Oregon got double-doubles from both Phillipina Kyei (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Grace VanSlooten (17 points, 16 rebounds) to go with a season-high 17 points from freshman Sarah Rambus off the bench. Chance Gray flited with a triple-double with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Kennedy Basham added a career-high 10 boards.
A plus-23 rebounding advantage (58-35) helped UO to a 40-8 edge in points in the paint. It marked the first time three Ducks finished with double-figure rebounds in the same games since last season against Eastern Washington.
How It Happened: Nevada's largest lead of the night came in the first quarter when it led 15-8. The Ducks closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run to tie the score at 15 after 10 minutes. Kyei scored seven of her points in the quarter, including the tying layup while making three free throws. Three of the Wolf Pack's seven 3-pointers came in the first quarter.
Neither team was able to create much separation in the second quarter, as neither side led by more than three points. VanSlooten converted a driving layup with five second on the clock to give the Ducks a one-point lead at the half, 33-32.
Rambus, coming off the bench, scored 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting (5-for-6 FT) with three rebounds and two blocks in the first half alone. Her 11 points by itself marked a season high for the freshman, who finished the night with 17.
"She can face the hoop and make that 15 ,16, 18 footer and she hit a couple of them tonight," Graves said of Rambus. "That softens up the defense a little bit, but she played with energy and confidence."
UO shot 28.6 percent from the field, including 0-for-3 from deep, but converted 10-of-12 free throws in the first half.
The Ducks continued their run into the second half, scoring the first 17 points of the third quarter to put together a 19-0 run and owned a 54-37 lead through three. The Wolf Pack missed their first 11 shots of the third, with their first made field goal coming with 1:46 to play in the quarter.

"I was really pleased, overall," added Graves. "It was a really good effort. We got back up on that horse, so to speak. We got bucked off the other night and had a really bad taste in our mouths. I'm just really proud of our team to come out tonight and work their butts off and follow the game plan."
Notable: Kyei turned in her fourth double-double of the season and 12th of her career, moving her into an 18th-place tie in UO history (tying Nyara Sabally) … Oregon is 11-1 when Kyei has a double-double … VanSlooten picked up her second double-double of the season and fourth of her career, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds … Basham added a career-high 10 rebounds, as three Ducks finished with double-digit boards for the first time since last season (Eastern Washington on Dec. 15) … Nevada entered the game averaging 26.0 points off turnovers a game, but scored just four Tuesday.
Up Next: After a break for Thanksgiving, the Ducks continue their three-game road trip Thursday, Nov. 30 at Portland (6 p.m.).
