UO Tallies Four Singles Wins Friday at SDSU Fall Classic

SAN DIEGO – Four singles victories highlighted Oregon's first day at the SDSU Fall Classic Friday, with each moving on to the semifinal rounds of their respective brackets at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State.

Sophie Luescher, Nina Geissler, Tilde Jagare and Karin Young each earned straight-set victories in their quarterfinal matches Friday. For Jagare, a freshman from Gavle, Sweden, it marked her first collegiate singles victory, as she defeated UC San Diego's Kelly Leung, 6-3, 6-4.

Young came away with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Colorado's Carrington Hayes, as both she and Jagare advanced in the white singles bracket and will face a pair of Colorado State opponents in the semifinal round. Young will take on Sarah Weekley while Jagare will meet Victoira Erechtchenko on Saturday.

Luescher got by fellow Pac-12 foe in Betina Tokac from Colorado, 7-5, 6-1 to improve her fall singles record to a team-best 7-1. Luescher will match up against Nevada's Amahee Charrier for a spot in the red singles bracket final.

In the black singles bracket, Geissler recovered from a setback in the opening frame to defeat Nevada's Marlene Foerster, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The fifth-year senior will take on SDSU's Rania Azziz in the semifinals.

Chan forced two extra-point tiebreakers in her first match against the Wolfpack's Lou Anne Guebert, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (7) in the black singles bracket. Uxia Martinez Moral suffered a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Gloria Alogo of the Aztecs in the red singles bracket.

Oregon has posted a combined 21-11 singles record while going 12-8 in doubles so far this fall season. Young pushed her singles mark to 4-1 while Geissler improved to 3-1.
