Couisnard's Double-Double Helps UO Men Stay Perfect At Home
12/21/23 | Men's Basketball
Oregon beat Kent State on Thursday, and now has a week off before opening Pac-12 play at home against USC.
EUGENE, Ore. — Jermaine Couisnard recorded his first career double-double and led four Ducks who scored in double figures as the UO men's basketball team remained perfect at home this season with an 84-70 win Thursday over Kent State before 5,056 fans at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (8-3) won for the sixth time at home this season, with Couisnard scoring a season-high 27 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds. Oregon led by 20 early in second half and saw the lead cut all the way to four before pulling away again to win, four days after a disheartening loss to Syracuse.
"Much different game," UO coach Dana Altman said. "As disappointed as I was in our team on Sunday, I'm equally as pleased tonight. I thought we played really hard. They made a run, and we regained our composure. … We took a couple steps tonight."

Kario Oquendo added 20 points, and Jackson Shelstad had 15 points with five assists, four rebounds and four steals — with no turnovers, on a night the Ducks committed just five as a team. Jadrian Tracey added 10 points, and Kwame Evans Jr. filled it up with six points, eight rebounds, six blocked shots and two steals.
"I thought we took the challenge (from Altman) to play harder like we usually do, so it was a good bounce-back win for us," Oquendo said. "Everybody was locked it, and it started from coach."
How It Happened: Couisnard set the tone from the jump, scoring the first bucket of the game. A layup by Tracey followed by a three from Couisnard made it 18-11, and Oquendo put together a personal 7-0 run to put Oregon up 25-13.
A three-pointer from Oquendo got the lead out to 30-16. After Kent State closed within 10 at 34-24, a Tracey three followed by five straight points from Couisnard made it 42-24. Oquendo closed the first half with another three, and the Ducks took a 45-29 lead into halftime.

Baskets from Couisnard and Evans to open the second half pushed the lead to 20, but Kent State responded with an 11-0 run. Couisnard ended the run with a layup, but the Golden Flashes scored another eight in a row moments later to close within 55-51.
The Ducks responded with a 14-3 run, however, and led by double digits the rest of the way. Couisnard had two field goals plus a couple of free throws during that decisive run.
"He got us a couple baskets inside and really turned the game back around," Altman said.
Leading 71-58, Oregon scored eight straight to put together the biggest lead of the night, of 21 points. Tracey hit two free throws to get the lead back to 21 at 81-60, before Kent State narrowed the gap in the waning minutes.
Up Next: The Ducks open Pac-12 play by hosting USC in Matthew Knight Arena on Dec. 28 (6 p.m., ESPN2).
