Ducks Split Pair in Puerto Vallarta

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – No. 24 Oregon split a pair of games Friday at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.
The Ducks defeated Wisconsin, a 2022 NCAA Tournament team, 4-2 in the afternoon, but fell to No. 3 Oklahoma State in a close 3-0 decision in the nightcap.
How it Happened vs. Wisconsin: Oregon (1-2) took advantage of three Wisconsin errors in the second inning and got a strong performance out of the pen from Raegan Breedlove to win for the first time in 2023.
Ariel Carlson led off the second with a double and went to third on a throwing error on the play to start the Ducks' three-run inning.
Two outs later, Carlson came home on an error at third base on Tehya Bird's at-bat. Another error at third allowed KK Humpherys to reach base with Bird advancing to second. Kedre Luschar beat out an infield single that scored Bird and then Hanna Delgado found a hole at third for a single that plated Humphreys.
Wisconsin (0-3) answered with a run in the top of the third, but Oregon responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Alyssa Daniell led off with a double – her first hit as a Duck – and pinch-runner Kai Luschar scored after a throwing error on Bird's sacrifice bunt attempt.
In the top of the fifth inning, the first two Wisconsin batters reached base and Breedlove came on in relief with runners on second and third and none out. After a walk to load the bases, Oregon's defense stepped up to the moment.
The Badgers got a run on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2 before the Ducks recorded back-to-back force outs at home. The first saw Bird make the play from third and the second had Paige Sinicki making a sharp play from shortstop to beat the runner coming from third. Breedlove then got Ellie Hubbard to ground out to Sinicki to end the inning.
Breedlove earned the win after throwing three innings and allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout and two walks.
How it Happened vs. No. 3 Oklahoma State: Oregon went toe-to-toe with the third-ranked Cowgirls for four innings before OSU scored three times in the fifth inning.
The Ducks had a chance to take the early lead in the second inning on Humphreys' lead-off double, but she was stranded at third.
In the circle, Stevie Hansen allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out four in her first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. The Cowgirls took advantage of three walks in the inning on lengthy pitch counts – one of which was a 13-pitch walk – to plate three runs.
That was enough for OSU ace Kelly Maxwell, who struck out 15 and gave up two hits.
There was also a statistical rarity in the OSU game that had happened only one before in the last five seasons. Maxwell struck out Bunker twice, marking just the second time in 185 career games that Bunker had been fanned twice in a game.
Elise Sokolsky impressed in three shutout innings of relief to close out the game for Oregon.
Noteworthy: With her single in the fifth inning against Wisconsin, Bunker moved into the UO career top 10 in hits, tying Alexa Peterson (2011-14) with 218. She then passed Peterson with her seventh inning single against Oklahoma State … Bunker has a three-game hitting streak to open the 2023 season … Breedlove is 7-0 in her first seven decisions as a Duck … Bunker and Humphreys had hits in both games Friday … Daniell was two-for-three in her first Oregon start … All five Duck newcomers played on Friday. In addition to Daniell and Sokolsky, Morgan Scott, Kyle Morris and Remmington Hewitt all saw action. Scott got the start against Wisconsin and gave up a run in 2.2 innings. Hewitt pinch-hit for Morris in the sixth inning against OSU and smashed a shot down the line that Cowgirl third baseman Megan Bloodworth made a tremendous diving play on … In the top of the third against the Badgers, Delgado made a difficult catch while crashing into the wall in center field. She later left the game in the sixth inning and was replaced in the field by Morris in her Oregon debut.
On Deck: Oregon plays Ole Miss Saturday at 1 p.m. Pacific. The game will be live streamed on FloSoftball.com.
