Ducks Stumble in Second Half at USC
02/10/23 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES — Oregon led by eight points at halftime, but USC outscored the Ducks 23-12 in the third quarter and clung to a 56-51 win Friday night at Galen Center.
The Ducks (14-10, 5-8) led by a dozen after the first quarter (20-8), paced by eight points from Endyia Rogers, and held a 28-21 lead at the half. The Trojans (18-6, 8-5) forced UO into six turnovers in the third quarter and used a 9-0 run to claim their first lead since the opening quarter.
In the fourth, the teams combined to shoot just 5-of-32 from the field. Oregon went 3-for-17, making just two of its last 13 field goal tries.
"We're just not making the plays necessary when they need to be made," said head coach Kelly Graves. "This is a disappointment, it really is. We certainly defended well enough tonight. I thought we did a pretty good job on Rayah (Marshall), but down the stretch they got every offensive rebound. They had that next gear that we can't reach sometimes, that's pretty frustrating."
Trailing by three entering the fourth, UO was held without a point over a six-minute stretch, going 0-for-8 in that span until a Rogers lay-in brought the Ducks within five, 50-45, at the 2:13 mark.
"This game tonight was winnable" Graves added. "We've got to find a way to make the plays when it matters most.
"I liked our start, I liked our energy early. And then, for whatever reason in the second half, we didn't play with that same energy."
The UO offense started hot with 20 points in the opening quarter on 7-of-15 shooting. The next three quarters, however, the Ducks combined to shoot 12-for-40 (30 percent), including 2-of-10 from behind the arc.
Rogers led Oregon with 14 points, as her and Grace VanSlooten (10) were the only Ducks to crack double figures. Phillipina Kyei added seven points and a game-high 15 rebounds while Te-Hina Paopao finished with nine points.
USC's offensive attack was spearheaded by 18 points apiece from Destiny Littleton and Adika Okako. Okako added 11 boards for her double-double and Rayah Marshall also grabbed 11 rebounds.
How it happened: The Ducks held USC to 3-of-17 shooting in the first quarter and used an early 9-0 run to open a 20-8 lead after the first quarter. Rogers dropped eight points while Paopao added six to pace the Ducks. Kyei grabbed six rebounds in the opening session.
The Trojans responded with a 13-9 edge in the second quarter, hitting on 3-of-7 3-point tries while UO went 4-for-13 from the field. Ahlise Hurst scored all five of her points in the quarter. Adiko scored six of USC's 13 points in the quarter, helping her team close the half on an 8-2 run.
A 9-0 USC run in the third quarter helped the Trojans claim their first lead since the opening quarter, 40-38. USC connected on three of its first four 3-point attempts of the second half and 7-of-13 field goals overall in chipping away at UO's lead.
The Ducks, who led by as many as 14 in the first half, committed six turnovers and were out-scored 23-12 in the third quarter.
Oregon was held without a point for over six minutes in the fourth quarter, making two of its last 13 field goal tries. UO went 3-for-17 in the fourth, as the two teams combined to shoot 5-for-32 in the frame.
Notable: Oregon scored a season-low 51 points and have been held under 60 points three times this season … The Ducks' season-long losing skid sits at four games, while they have lost six of seven overall … The four-game losing streak is Oregon's longest since losing five straight in 2015-16 … Kyei recorded her sixth game with 15 or more rebounds, most by a Duck since 10 such games by Jillian Alleyne in 2015-16.
Quotable:
UO coach Kelly Graves on his USC's defensive effort on Rogers after the first quarter…
"They put a lot more pressure on her, they trapped her a little bit. You could tell that was a focus of theirs after that start. We should've done a better job at getting her open looks."
UO coach Kelly Graves on the Ducks' recent struggles…
"As a coach, I've got to help them figure this thing out. We're losing opportunities here. This one is very similar to some of the other games we've had, unfortunately."
Up Next: The Ducks take on No. 18 UCLA Sunday at Pauley Pavilion (12 p.m., Pac-12 Networks).
