Slow Second Half Dooms Ducks
02/11/23 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. — The Ducks started hot, but could not keep the pace, falling to No. 7 UCLA 70-63 at Matthew Knight Arena.
An eight-to-zero run to start the game was the biggest bright spot on a night where Oregon watched a halftime lead slip away down the stretch. Jaime Jaquez Jr. was the difference for the No. 7 ranked UCLA Bruins, tallying 25 points, including 18 in the second half.
How It Happened: Oregon picked up where the left off last game against USC, striking first to sting the Bruins early. Oregon jumped out to an eight-zero lead to start the game and the home fans were on their feet. UCLA found their rhythm out of the timeout, going on an eight-to-zero run of their own to tie things up. The Bruins continued to hold momentum and jumped out to a 14-10 lead.
The Ducks then got things under control to tie it up at 18, behind a big first half from N'Faly Dante. Dante net 11 points with eight rebounds in the half to give Oregon a much-needed lift. Oregon was strong on defense in the first, holding the Bruins to just one of their last eight field goals. At the break, Oregon held a slim 33-30 advantage.
This one quickly turned into a tale of two halves as the second half got underway. UCLA jumped out on a quick 4-0 run to take Oregon's lead away for good. Jaquez Jr. got on a roll and turned the tide in favor of the Bruins. An 18-4 run for UCLA put this one out of reach, although Oregon would make it close.
Jermaine Couisnard hit some tough shots after UCLA went up 15 late in the second. A quick scoring burst left the Ducks down six with 16 seconds left to play. It turned out to be too little, too late, for Oregon, who was outscored 40-30 in the second half.
Who Stood Out: Couisnard was the statistical bright spot for the Ducks with 19 points, netting seven-of-eight free throws. Dante was the lone other UO player in double-digits with 13 and nine boards.
Up Next: The Ducks travel to Seattle to face Washington at 8:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
