Hansen No-Hitter Highlights Sweep
02/17/23 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – Stevie Hansen threw a no-hitter and Allee Bunker blasted two home runs as the Ducks swept Utah Valley and UC Riverside Friday to open the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Hansen threw a six-inning no-hitter in the opening game against Utah Valley, striking out nine Wolverines in the Ducks' 9-0 win.
"I had no clue," said Hansen, unaware she was throwing a no-hitter. "It was kind of one of those things where you just get into the groove of the game and you're just focused on getting outs and getting your job done."
Trailing 1-0 in the second game, Bunker hit her second homer of the day in the third inning against UC Riverside and the Ducks (5-3) went on to defeat the Highlanders, 6-1.
"I thought Stevie really just set the tone for the day," said head coach Melyssa Lombardi. "You could see her ball had really, really good movement on it and I liked her competitive spirit out on the mound."
How it Happened Game 1: Hansen was nearly untouchable in the early going, striking out eight of the first 10 batters she faced on swinging third strikes. She faced the minimum 12 batters through the first four innings
Kalena Shepherd drew a walk on a full count to lead off the fifth and break up Hansen's perfect game. After a couple of outs on fielder's choices, Megan Gibbs was thrown out at second by Terra McGowan to end the inning.
The Wolverines (2-4) got a runner on in the sixth inning when Angelique Mann reached on an error by shortstop Paige Sinicki. But Hansen retired the next two batters on a fly out and a fielder's choice. She then struck out Libbie Hawker to end the inning, her ninth strikeout of the game.
The sophomore from Norco, Calif., faced just one batter over the minimum and threw 87 pitches in posting her first no-hitter as a collegian. The win evened Hansen's record on the season at 2-2.
"I really liked how she managed her counts and from there was able to put hitters away quickly," said Lombardi.
The game was tight until Oregon's bats came to life in the sixth inning.
McGowan doubled in the third and eventually came around to score on an error and a wild pitch for a 1-0 Ducks' lead. KK Humphreys homered to lead off the fifth inning. Her first home run of the year gave the Ducks a 2-0 advantage.
The Ducks put up seven runs on seven consecutive hits in the sixth inning to end the game via the run rule.
Bunker got the scoring started with a one-out homer to left.
Pinch-hitter Remmington Hewitt singled into left for her first hit as a Duck. McGowan and Humphreys followed with singles to load the bases. Ariel Carlson singled to center to score a couple of runners. Then Tehya Bird doubled to knock in Humphreys and Hewitt, making it 7-0.
Vallery Wong finished things off by crushing a 1-1 pitch over the wall in center field to end the game via the run rule, 9-0.
How it Happened Game 2: The Ducks spotted UC Riverside (3-4) a one-run lead in the second, but quickly erased it in the third. McGowan drew a walk on four pitches and Bunker launched the first pitch she saw from Grace Pierson over the wall in left center.
Oregon took advance of mistakes by the Highlanders to open up the game in the later innings.
In the fifth, McGowan singled and went to third on Bunker's single. Alyssa Daniell lined out to center field, but the ball was deep enough for McGowan to tag and score on the play.
With Bunker on second, Humphreys walked. Bunker then raced home with the Ducks' fourth run of the game going to third on a wild pitch and then scoring on an error on the catcher on the play.
Oregon scored its last two runs of the game under similar circumstances in the sixth inning.
Kyla Morris pinch-hit and pulled a ball through the hole between first and second for her first hit as a Duck. Sinicki followed with a single and both runners advanced a base on a double steal. Then Morris scored on a wild pitch and Sinicki came home from second on yet another error committed by the UC Riverside catching corps.
That was more than enough for Morgan Scott and Raegan Breedlove. The first three Highlanders hitter reached off Scott in the second when UC Riverside scored its lone run. It could have been worse, but Scott retired the next three batters, including two by strikeout, to get out of the inning.
Scott gave up a run on four hits and struck out three in four innings to move to 2-0 on the season.
Breedlove entered the game in the bottom of the fifth with the Ducks leading 4-1 and proceed to allow just two hits – both singles – to earn a nine-out save, her first of the season.
Noteworthy: With four hits on Friday, Bunker jumped from 10th to eighth on the UO career hits list. She passed Jenna Lilley (222/2015-18) and Jill Robinson (224/1997-00) and now shows 225 career hits. She's just two back of seventh place (Kathy Stahl, 227, 1993-96) and five out of sixth (Sari-Jane Jenkins, 230, 2006-09). Bunker has a seven-game hitting streak to open the 2023 season … The last Oregon no-hitter came last season (April 27) against Long Beach State … The last individual no-hitter was March 26, 2021, against LMU by Makenna Kliethermes … Breedlove lowered her team-leading ERA to 0.84 … Carlson and McGowan both went 3-for-5 on Friday, while McGowan scored four times … This was the first meeting between Oregon and UC Riverside since 2005.

Head Coach Melyssa Lombardi on the defense
"I thought our defense was really, really good today. You talk about defense winning championships. That's our backbone. They just get it done. I really like how they go after it. They work really well together. They make things easier on our pitchers and allow our pitchers just to throw and not have to do it all themselves."

"When we need clutch, they know how to clutch up."
