Ducks Score Season-High 12 Runs in Win
02/19/23 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – Terra McGowan and Allee Bunker combined to hit for the cycle in the first two inning and Stevie Hansen came on in relief and shutdown UC Riverside as No. 24 Oregon defeated the Highlanders 12-5 Sunday on the final day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
McGowan homered in the first inning and singled in the second, while Bunker tripled in the first and doubled in the second to lead a 12-hit barrage that led to a season high in run for the Ducks.
Meanwhile, after UC Riverside (4-6) closed to 8-5 in the top of the third, Hansen (4-2) made her fourth appearance of the tournament and shutout the Highlanders over the last 4.2 innings of the game to claim her third win of the weekend. She struck out seven and allowed just two hits.
McGowan's impressive weekend included 10 RBI over the course of the five-game tournament. She hit .556 (10-18) with two home runs, a double and scored nine runs. She had a .944 slugging percentage.
Hansen meanwhile struck out 24 batters in 18 innings. She went 3-0 with a 0.74 earned run average. She gave up just two runs on 10 hits and walked only two batters.
How it Happened: Oregon (8-2) scored eight runs in the first two innings.
Kyla Morris, leading off for the first time this season, walked and stole second. She came home on Bunker's triple into right field.
McGowan followed with a majestic home run that landed well beyond the fence in left center field for a 3-0 lead.
UC Riverside answered with a two-run home run of their own in the top of the second to make it 3-2.
The Ducks came right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Karissa Ornelas walked and went to second on Tehya Bird's single. Paige Sinicki was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ornelas was forced out at home on Morris' grounder.
Bunker then doubled into left center to score Bird and Sinicki. McGowan drove a line drive into right that scored Morris and Bunker and the Ducks led 7-2.
McGowan then scored on an error for an 8-2 advantage after two innings.
But the Highlanders weren't done and chased Oregon starter Elise Sokolsky with a three-run home run in the top of the third.
Hansen came on with one out and got the final two outs sandwiched around a single.
Bird led off the bottom of the third with her second home run of the year to make it 9-5. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth.
McGowan led off with a single and beat the throw to second on Kedre Luschar's fielder's choice. KK Humphreys hit a sacrifice fly to move both runners up 60 feet.
Ariel Carlson then tripled off the wall in right field to score two. Ornelas drove in Carlson with a single up the middle to cap the scoring for the Ducks.
Noteworthy: With two hits Sunday, Bunker passed Kathy Stahl (227, 1993-96) for seventh in UO career hits with 228 … Bunker's triple was the sixth of her career … A day after recording her first two-hit game, Bird did that one better with a career-best three hits on Sunday.
On Deck: Oregon returns to California for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic next weekend. The Ducks will face No. 3 Florida, No. 14 Northwestern, Missouri, Cal State Fullerton and Iowa State.
