Senior Day A Celebration For Ducks
02/25/23 | Women's Basketball
Oregon completed a weekend sweep by beating Arizona State on Saturday, and postgame the Ducks recognized their four seniors.
EUGENE, Ore. — Te-Hina Paopao kept up her hot shooting and Oregon capped its regular season in emphatic fashion Saturday, a 77-48 victory over Arizona State before 6,757 fans on Senior Day at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Ducks (16-13, 7-11 Pac-12) put a seven-game losing streak behind them with a weekend sweep of No. 14 Arizona and then the Sun Devils, giving them positive momentum entering the Pac-12 Tournament. They open play as the No. 9 seed against Washington on Wednesday (2:30 p.m., Pac-12 Network), looking to make a run to the title or burnish their credentials for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.
"That game Thursday night is one of the best games we've ever had here in the arena, got the fans I think re-juiced about us, and I think that carried over to today," UO coach Kelly Graves said. "To go in on a two-game winning streak., it doesn't sound like much, but for us it is."
Paopao had 23 points Saturday, including 20 in the first half. She made a career-high seven three-pointers, one more than the six she made Sunday at Washington to give her 18 in the three-game stretch that ended Saturday. Endyia Rogers added 17 points on her Senior Day, while fellow seniors Taya Hanson, Taylor Hosendove and Ahlise Hurst combined for 22 points and 22 rebounds.

"We came together as a team," Paopao said. "We had to believe in ourselves. We talked about how we had to take one game at a time; we can't look ahead. We know every game is a winnable game. We had to come and play like we've been playing, and keep building on that into Vegas."
How It Happened: It was clear from the start Paopao was still on fire, as she hit a three during an 8-2 run by the Ducks to open the game. After getting within 8-4, ASU missed its next eight shot, but the UO women managed only a second three-pointer by Paopao during that stretch. The Sun Devils closed the first quarter with a 6-3 run, broke up only by Paopao's third three-pointer of the game already.
It was 14-12 at that point, with 10 of ASU's 12 points coming after offensive rebounds. Oregon tightened down and only allowed two second-chance points in the second quarter, blowing the game open with a 15-2 run to close the first half. Paopao hit back-to-back threes to spark that run, and yet another later in the run before Taylor Hosendove put back a miss with a baseline jumper to beat the halftime buzzer for a 39-22 lead.
Hosendove had four points and four rebounds in the period, and also a pretty assists to Phillipina Kyei. Hosendove was one of five Ducks to finish the afternoon with multiple assists.
"Our coaches and (Paopao) — our leader of the team — talk about sharing the ball," Hosendove said. "When we share the ball, we come out more successful. So if I get the ball and I see somebody open, I'm going to give it to them. That's my favorite thing to do, is pass."

Each team missed its first 11 shots of the second half, a cold spell broken by — what else? — Paopao's seventh three-pointer of the game for a 47-25 lead. Oregon put together a 13-0 run capped by two free throws from Rogers before ASU ended a streak of 13 straight misses to open the second half. The Sun Devils' first field goal of the third quarter came with just 2:14 left in the period, and Oregon led 53-31 entering the fourth.
After ASU used a 10-2 run to close within 61-43, Hurst set up Kennedy Basham for a bucket and then Hurst made a three on the next possession for a 66-43 lead. The Sun Devils scored to make it 66-45, but a three-point play by Hosendove sparked a run of 11 straight points for Oregon as the Ducks put the game away.
Notable: The Ducks played their third straight game without freshman Grace VanSlooten, though the forward was out of the walking boot she sported on the bench Thursday. … Oregon's single-game record for three-pointers made remains 10 by Jaz Shelley against UC Riverside on Dec. 16, 2019. … The last three times Paopao and Rogers both scored more than 10 points in the same game coincides with Oregon's three most recent wins.

"That's called character. She's got great character and she's a great competitive spirit. She's tough. She believes in herself her teammates believe in her, we believe in her. And it was just a matter of time. I'm glad that it's right now, because it's made us a more dynamic team. And we know we can count on her. So I'm really proud of her. It could have not ended that well. She picked herself up; it's a great life lesson. Sometimes things don't go so well for all of us, and you just make the best of it and keep grinding. And in the end, good things can happen."

"Right now, we're without Grace. I have not been told that that's something that, 'hey, she's coming in a day or two,' or whatever. We're just going in figuring we're gonna have to play with the group we had this weekend — and then just hope for the best."
